Volkswagen Motorsport has unveiled their new Golf race car concept.
Designed to "evaluate a potential customer racing program," the car has an aggressive front fascia with a front splitter and larger air intakes. Moving further back, we can see revised side skirts, extended wheel arches and a carbon rear wing. The model also has a rear diffuser, a dual exhaust system and 18-inch racing wheels.
Since the car was designed for the track, the interior was been stripped of all non-essential equipment. In their place, is a racing seat, a roll cage and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel.
Power is provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 330 PS (243 kW) and 410 Nm (302 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a DSG transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
While the car is technically a concept, the Liqui Moly Team Engstler will run two of them at the eighth round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
According to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito, "The newly created TCR category provides a promising platform for customer racing – on a national and international level. With exciting races, production-based technology and reasonable costs, it offers a new outlook for private racing teams."
