    Hey.

Looking to replace the coilpacks and spark plugs on my passat. I found these on ECS and was curious as to whether anyone has done this upgrade and whether or not its worth for me to replace them with these 2.0t ones or just stick to stock ones.

    Here's the link.

Is it the same set that is on the website just all red instead? If so, how much?

There has been a lot of debate about weather the 2.0T coils are an improvement on new 1.8T coils... or if the improvement people have noticed is simply from replacing a tired out part. I've come across one person (Swede going by "Gulfstream") on Vortex who actually dynoed both sets of ignition coils and there was no difference whatsoever. I think the 2.0T coils are a little cheaper than the 1.8's though so it may be worth it for some people on that alone.

That "conversion plate" isn't needed but there are a few different versions of billet holders around - not everyone likes the look of the tops of the ignition coils sticking above the valve cover... although it should keep the coils a little cooler when they're not resting on a hot surface...

Yeah I noticed the price difference was one main thing that caught my eye, they did say that it would provide a slight power improvement although I could honestly care less about that. If I wanted more power I would chip it, I need it to be reliable at the moment. Your'e telling me that the plate isn't of any use then? People just complained about the gap and that was the fix? Thanks for the info, I will think about that when I decide to purchase new coil packs.

Exactly - when the 2.0T coils were first being tested a guy on Vortex came up with the idea/design for adapters to bridge the gap between the coils and valve cover... one the vendors (INA I think) started producing the first test batches and the other vendors quickly followed. ECS makes a plate... not needed but not everyone like the look of raised coils.

Ahhhh icic. Ok cool. Thanks a lot for input guys. I don't have a lot of knowledge with these gas engines yet, thanks for helping me out.

Thanks for input Pat, I will keep that in mind!

I ran without the adapters for quite a while as well with no implications, just have to make sure to blow out the spark plug tubes before you remove the plugs (it's a good thing to do no matter what)

Ok, anything I should avoid as far as brands or kinds of spark plugs?

Is a spark plug gap gauge useful at all?

I got a gap gauge because I had bought a set of plugs that were supposedly pre-gapped but must have been dropped or something so they were all wonky. That said, I never needed to adjust plugs again as other plugs I bought were fine. I guess having a cheap gauge just to double check doesn't hurt.

I would check the gap to make sure they are consistent, for a stock car/ stage 1 car that isnt driven very hard - BKR6EIX plugs, if it has a tune and is driven fairly hard then BKR7EIX, (NGK). Either of those are the iridium and come pre-gapped.

Or if you don't mind changing the plugs with every oil change get the copper plugs for way cheaper and better performance. BKR6E
