  • 1.8t VW Turbo Build

so i noticed shaft play in my K04 turbo and it finally let go on me while cruising down the highway and went on to 16th and all i heard was a whine and no boost , took my k04 turbo out this thing looks horrible but since it was still driving and boosting i ordered a rebuild kit and not it endded up eating **** as both turbines are shot if anyone has new turbines give me a shout ill still rebuild this thing but ,

so far ive gotten an fittings turbo piping and a bunch of other parts from building my Turboed E30 so now its time to fit a holset h1c into this bad boy and see what she does

    so far iv got

    -holset h1c ,
    -new inter cooler piping
    -feed line
    -return line
    - new inter-cooler if my old ones messed up
-t3/t4 ebay manifold im gonna test it out as im not going all out on a stock motor just want a bit more power

    things to get

    -meth kit
    -bigger injectors
    -walbro fuel pump
-custom down pipe to hook up to my full magna flow turbo back
-stage 3 6 puck clutch kit love the feel as i got one in the turboed e30
    -unitronic tune

car already has pretty much everything else done up and i just want to get a bit more power since im used to the bmws pull

Whatever short cuts you take will fail with a 1.8t. Do it right and do it once. Have fun.

atm i just wanna see how well the stock turbo engine performs on water meth and trust me i know all about short cuts the bmw has put me through hell until i fixed all the short cuts , but i need the car up and running so im going to tune it for low boost with the h1c and see how it does , not looking for anything special yet im thinking of building the engine later on when i finally finish up the bmw ,

also did a compression test is

          1: 170 < spiked to 180 after a retest
          2: 180
          3:185
          4:185

this build might go along slowly but wil be built up when im done ill take pics of what ive been up 2 with it , and all but i also need to get it running as a daily driver so i still need the k04 rebuilt untill all my parts arrive , anyone have any ideas on where i can get new turbines for this thing or an upgrade or mods i can do that will work

Awesome to see a Holset build! Looking forward to that phase.

If that's the stock turbo that you're rebuilding then it's a K03... maybe it was upgraded though?

Im a holset fan the hx35 in my e30 spools up beautifully

I have a few K03's kicking around - that's why I asked. Good to hear you got it sorted though.

My memory on Holset sizes is a little rusty - how does the H1c compare to the Hx35?

                    Re: 1.8t VW Turbo Build

thats so retarded , it killed its self anyway installed a new K03 than and got a new problem , well not really a problem but it only boosts to 15 my old one boosted 25 i had to swap it in like i said dd have some pics also just installed a spoiler fixed a **** load of boost leaks....

                    hx35 has a 57/78mm compressor and 60mm turbine exducer

and the h1c is smaller than it with a small compressor housing the exhaust side seems like its the same size hopefully it will fit i dont wanna ever do a swap replacement stock k03 turbo again what a hassle.. those feed lines are ****.

im more into having my feed line easily accessible other than having to tear most the crap took out for a replacement spools up better than the one i had in but i need more power LOL. still awaiting parts for the big turbo to go in!

manifolds almost here its on its way from bc , now my issues what fitting would i need to install to remove the stock oil feed line and put in a custom one im not a fan of how short it is , from the oil filter location , to use my longer oil feed line will post a pic tom the turbo i just installed has some bad seals so i want to swap in my holset within the day and get the exhaust redone also got the apr stage 2 tune but pretty sure im gonna need to retune the car since a holsets going in and a custom wastegate which if anyone has im looking for a 38mm wastegate not looking to boost past 10 psi for now

                        Re: 1.8t VW Turbo Build

so as i started to pull everything a apart found out that my turbo seals are gone on that new k03 , k03 exhaust side was cracked from 4 places , my stock turbo manifold was cracked at the bottom where the turbos held and this thing was puffing out blew smoke when the car got warm , so got all my parts in and im currently almost done , most of the big things than the small things are left

fitment was really tight i gotta try and squeeze my turbo jacket on and polish the compressor housing of the turbo so everythings neat feed line is installed return is also installed just needs a few adjustments here are some pics been going at it all day ,

also realized the exhaust housing on the h1c is not a 3" so im going to have to find someone to make me a custom downpipe from a 2.5 exhaust v band pretty sure thats the size to a 3" so it bolts up to the magnaflow exhaust system i got on

thats all for now also need a custom extension for my wastegate i doubt the waste gates gonna mounts right under the holset its way to tight gonna make a custom pipe from the compressor housing and have the maf reinstalled , also custom ports for everything else that was installed with the small turbos intake basically i can also keep everything else piping wise the same it still fits perfectly ,

thing is should i run a boost controller or the n75 with this setup which is smarter

Whats up with that passengers side upper manifold to turbo bolt? Is it just too long and you used a nut to keep the turbo in place?

took quick pics last night it was to long we customized and used a file to fix the other bolts worked perfect that was the first bolt i put in i gotta take it out today and get it cut and filed to the right size ,

other than that today i should be pretty close or might be able to start the car and see if everythings good , pretty sure im gonna need a full custom intake for the compressor side tho gotta slap the turbo jacket on aswell will have more pics and keep yall posted didn't take much last night but ill snap some pics of the stock turbo manifold and turbo that have cracks in them ..

Don't know how I feel about that oil drain line. You should have a braided line built with threaded fittings and buy a pan adapter from CTS turbo. As for the wastegate, I'd leave it open dump. If its too close to things for comfort, have a screamer pipe built. It'll sound gnarly.
