  • Uh Oh......limp Mode

Car decided to go into Limp Mode today, she won't boost over 5psi. I'm not chipped so what gives? I turned the car off then on again and she still is in it. There are no check engine lights or anything unusual. Someone could help me, because I can't stand the lack of speed!

Any suggestions would help me alot

try leaving your car battery unplugged overnight to reset the ECU.. otherwise maybe now's the time to chip it?
      a 1.8T with 0psi is like 125hp or something..

so if atmospheric pressure at this altitude is 14psi, you're running a total of 19psi, so theoretically that's 170hp, but boost is usually only 75% effective.. so you're looking at like 150hp?

Wow....wouldn't have put it that way.....I think he meant 0psi as NA....so 1.03 atmosphere......or whatever it is at our altitude.....hehe, the way you said it makes my GF's civic supa fast...but it ain't...

My guess is, an unboosted 1.8 will produce approximately 105 hp (crank).

Here is my logic. An AWD 1.8T produces approx. 150 peak hp with about 6-7 psi. What this means is that you are forcing 41% (i.e. 6/14.7=.41) to 48% (i.e. 7/14.7=.48) more air than you would see from a normally aspirated setup. More air means more fuel, which means, more power. 41%-48% more power.

              Working back:
              150hp / 1.41 = 106hp
              150hp / 1.48 = 101hp

Taking the average, 104 hp (ahh, just call it 105 hp)

Let's see if this holds. My AWP is rated at 180 hp and holds steady around 10-11 psi at 5500 rpm.

              10/14.7= .68
              11/14.7= .75

              105 hp x 1.68 = 176 hp
              105 hp x 1.75 = 184 hp

Average them out, and you get 180 hp

The 1 bar (i.e.14.7 psi) APR chip is rated at 209 hp. Taking 105 hp x 2 = 210 hp. That's pretty close.

These calculations basically assume EVERYTHING else is constant and seem to at least put you in the ball park (at least of the rated values).

Wait... let me put my Nomex on.

Do you have a boost gauge? What are you boosting at?

Wastegate is controlled partly through backpressure. You have an exhaust and other mods, so you could be boosting higher than stock levels.

I've never hit limp that wouldn't go away after restarting the car though. I think that the chip parameters make that particular limit more difficult to hit.

I only hit limp when I drive into the mountains in BC. Too much elevation for my poor car to handle

I am boosting around 13-14 psi in the spike and then down to about 10 till the redline.

Was probably just a fluke then...

Sounds normal. I spike to ~16 and settle around 10-11ish. I used to spike to ~14psi with the N75F.

I'd say go MBC but its a hassle adjusting it constantly, it seems like I can't "set it and forget it".
