  • timing belt and suspension question

2005 tdi passat. time for timing belt repalcement, I'm a mechanic but have never done a belt on a VW. do i really need those special tools?

next question, replacing upper control arms. with the locking pin bolt is there other ways of removing the control arms. I've seen a pic of some pressing tool that i don't have also. hit with a big hammer?

    thanks

As for the timing belt...yeah you need those tools....or have to make them...TDI's. Aren't like a regular timing belt...maybe go to TDICLUB and do a search...a common mistake is not putting the tensioner on correctly, causing hugecissues down the road. I haven't done control arms on mine yet.

Do you need all the tools no, you have worked with cars and probably know how to make things work. Will the tools make your life easier, yep, but they are all not needed.

What you really should look into is the whole balance shaft issue, and doing a delete while you do the timing belt. As a mechanic I am sure you could figure out a delete pretty easily and that seems to be the best solution now.

I did it, haven't turned a wrench for money in 7 years plus, you should be able to figure it out.

Suspension get creative, air chisel? Get a kit from the states, $350 I think gets you all control arms and tie rods, way cheaper then worldpac.

I have a dead passat tdi in my garage because of the dumb slush box. Waiting to get a manual from europe and go that way. Cheaper then the $4200 rebuilt from the dealer.

Thanks for the clarification Ben...Doesn't Dark side make a six speed my for about $3g shipped? That could be for a Golf\Jetta tho.

ya i got upper control arms because one side has play so i'll just do both side. the big crapy issue is the bolt that goes thru and holds them into the spindle. mine are major seized. cutting and drilling will be next. At least i fixed my rear wiper motor, seized from rust and water.

Re: timing belt and suspension question

My last passat tdi (04 sedan) I did an upper control arm with the same problem, heat and an air chisel I think is what I used, but its been 4 years since I did it. I just used a round pointed bit instead of a flat one and it took awhile if I remember correctly. Lots of liquid wrench was also used on this as well.

Still debating between the 6 vs 5 speed, there are a few install issues with the 6 speed vs the 5 speed.
