  • Opinions about a 2004 Touareg V6 (3.2)

    Hey everyone,

I have a friend at work looking at buying a 2004 Touareg and asked my opinion. As I dont know entirely too much about these cars, I was wondering what if you guys could help me out in advising him. I remember that there was a Touareg that was a money pit on maintenance because every job required an engine pull, however I believe that was for the v8.

Is there anything specific he should look out for or have checked out?

    Thanks in advance!

The V10 TDI was a bad one for maintenance.... Still cool though

V10 is the one you have to drop, although 2004 was not a good year for seals and suspension if I remember correctly reading. It was a new model if I remember correctly and they made a bunch of mistakes.

Yeah.. coming from experience here, if you want a Touareg id stay away from 04s.. Our 2009 has given us 0 issues untill last week (owned it for 4-5 years now). The drive shaft center support went.. took about an hour to fix.

fun fact, the engineering team that designed the 04-05.5/06 touaregs were all fired after the first year of them being released...there was recalls and tsb's galore for the early touaregs, mainly for electrical stuff thats very time consuming/expensive

Recalls can often be fixed and the problems don't come back, electrical is another animal. Would you say the best advice would be to tell him to stay away from 04's? Or do they have the potential to be a good SUV if all the recalls have been done?

I dont know, but when we were buying ours we were just advised to get a Touareg 2. The facelifts main purpose was to seperate the "reengineered" Touaregs from the older ones, but i believe the last year of the original Toaureg had all the fixes.. (05 i believe?)

My parents had a 2006 V6 from around 30,000km's to 120,000km's. Car caused them very few problems. They did have one expensive repair (front differential went) at 110K but was fixed under the extended warranty they had purchased. Otherwise the truck was a beast. Slow as hell though as its pretty underpowered and weighs a lot. They sold it and bought a 2014 V6 Touareg that they are equally happy with!
