  • Known Early Jetta IV Issues

Hi.. i own a 99.5 Jetta MKIV 2.0L 8v Automatic. I know, i know, its disgustingly slow.. but im only 18 and its all i can afford right now. Anyway, i bought it used from southgate Volkswagen, up here in edmonton, with an additional 2yrs of warrantee.
before this warrantee comes to an end, id like to know what are common problems that have happened to people with similar vehicles, so i can try to get as much stuff replaced as possible before my warrantee is up.
Sadly, i dont know a whole lot about cars, all i know is MK4's are pretty and im glad i own one.
So yea.. back to what i was saying..
Can you guys do me a favor a post all the problems you've had with your MK4's, jetta's, auto trannies, 2.0L engines or anything that could possibly have gone wrong, or will go wrong with my car? stuff like timing belts, tranny shift-point problems etc..?
i just wanna get everything i can possibly get replaced, replaced now, so i dont have to spend thousands of dollars keeping my jetta running after the warrantee expires.
    thanks guys!
    -Ryan

btw, i just started modding the car up, and so far ive got the votex front bumper with white side markers and some misc other stuff.. i'll post some nice 5.2MP high resolution pics up once i lower it and throw on some 19" RS4's.

    Let's see...
    1. Window Regulators
    2. MAF sensor
    3. Window Regulators
    4. Coil Packs (is that an issue on the 2.0?)
    5. Window Regulators

[Groundskeeper Willy]Theeeere... that should do it.[/Groundskeeper Willy]

its funny because ive actually had my car serviced 3 seperate times for window regulators.. what's this about the MAF Sensor and "Coil Packs", i dont know anything about cars, so i have to come up with something to tell the dealership why they should be replaced.

I thought that the 99-00's had CEL issues more frequently...I read a bunch would throw unknown or incurably CEL's, was an ECU prob?? Not trying to spread paranoia, just what I heard....

MAF = Mass Airflow Sensor. They've retroactively extended the warrantee on this item to 7 years or so, so you should be covered on it for a while. Maybe check with the dealer if they are replacing them before they die if you are concerned.

Frankly, my mechanical knowledge isn't much better than yours, so I'll let someone else explain the coil pack thingy. I believe it is the equivalent of ignition coils, but like I said, this may not be an issue for the 2.0.

            Welcome Ryan!

Like I said on vortex, the 2.0 really drinks alot of oil, but that varies on the car, so yours might not go through any at all, or might go through alot. Just keep an eye on it.

Previously said things here might not apply, like coilpacks are a non-issue for 2.0's. The MAF however, went twice on my old 2.0, but they're usually covered by warranty, so you dont have to worry about that until it actually goes.

Just find out if your dealer will void MAF warranty BEFORE you put on an intake or K&N filter. If u poor, leave the airbox/intake alooonnnneee.

oh ****.. i just put in a P-Flow SRI Intake or whatever.. i really should have got my MAF replaced first. i mean, that intake made/makes less than a 1hp difference anyway.

CEL is a check engine light, comes on the dash when you have a problem, sometimes stays sometimes goes off. The ECU is the computer the controls the car, it cannot be replaced but it can be modified by chipping.

They won't replace it just cause you ask, and the replacements are just as flakey as the originals. Just put the stock airbox back if you find your maf is dying and then go in to get it replaced. The intake does not cause bad mafs, but they can deny you based on it.

Re: Known Early Jetta IV Issues

the CEL is check engine light. It can come on for a variety of reasons, from your gas cap not being on securely to maybe your engine is dying. If your car drives perfectly fine, no need to tow the car in, but go in or ask one of us to diagnose your car. there are a few members in the club with diagnosing tools to tell you exactly whats wrong.

I put the P-Flow on my old 2.0 and got constant CEL's and ruined 1 MAF. but I put my stock intake back on and they replaced it free.

It should be said about the CEL that if it's *flashing* then you should pull over immediately. Something is very wrong. But if it is on solid then you are ok to drive under reduced power (this is according to the owners manual anyways).

Maybe if you had some appropriate engine codes... can the VAG-COM store codes or only read/clear them?
