  • VW Extended Warranty

On a 2014 CC, 2.0TSI, the 5 star Protection Plus program from VW will extend your warranty from 80,000km to 200,000km with pretty extensive coverage, for approx 4500$. On one hand, this seems like a big chunk of cash, but on the other, how may warrantied repairs are you almost guaranteed to have between 80 and 200k km? Maybe not so bad after all?

What's everyone's thoughts? Lets assume you are pretty confident you are keeping the car for a long time.

I got something like this for my Mazda6, never got my money's worth out of it though because it was 200k/4years. If the years are low then not worth it, if it's 200k/10years then I'd say that's pretty good.

For that price, it would be warrantied until Sept 2024, or 200,000km. Of course, the first 4 years, 80,000km you get anyways, so it is extended by 6 years and 120,000km. The extended warranty adds a couple perks during the standard warranty period, but I don't think it's anything crazy.

As with all additional extended warranties, I figure you're essentially buying insurance... So, how risk averse are you, and how hard are you on your cars? You gotta figure that every company offering such things runs all the numbers, and expects to make money on average - plus builds in a cushion for the risk they're taking on. In turn, the consumer is on average paying more than the expected repair bills. I'll stop there before going on a tangent about fixed vs. variable mortgages.

          Some questions to ask yourself:

Where can you take your vehicle for repairs? How are claims handled? What is the nature of the deductible? Is the warranty transferable? What is in the list of exclusions?

Compare to a third party: http://www.warrantydirect.ca/

Is the one form the dealership a better price? It shouldn't be since they are probably simply reselling the product of the company above.

How strict are they on who services the car? Does everything have to be done by VW? You are still going to have to pay for all the regular maintenance at the same intervals VW specifies. I do not see this as beneficial if you regularly keep up on the maintenance that 4500 could be used for repairs out of warrenty. If you are financing tack the interest paid on the money as well.

Maintenace can be done anywhere is my understanding, warranty work has to be done at dealer.

              How are claims handled?
Based on my Certified Pre-owned warranty claims, they have been really quite good.

What is the nature of the deductible?
No deductable if you get the "5 star" i believe.

              Is the warranty transferable?
              Yes

What is in the list of exclusions?
Would need to get more specifics here. The brochure touches on some things. Again, with the warranties I've had, they have covered a lot.

Third party warranties scare me - they are void by everything it seems. The last one I looked at said no work could be done yourself, and oil every 5000km (they don't care if your manual says 15,000km..)

I serviced both my VW's myself that were under an extended warranty with no issues. I also put a pile of repairs through on warranty - More than 4500$ for sure. I would hope that I am the anomaly though.

Buy your warranty through here http://fd-warranty.com/index.html This is 100% legit factory/OEM and will save you a lot of cash. I got it for my Mustang and had to use it once without any issues. Troy is super fast with the emails and getting back to you. When I told him what Ford quoted me for it he couldn't believe that the dealerships up here could get away with it.....Saved me just over $1000 if I recall.
