Interesting that they're saying DSG for the US and a regular automatic for Canada. I can't see them doing something different between markets, so I'm wondering if one of the press releases is wrong.
I have to think it will be DSG. I believe it a little more pricey, but traditional auto's cause issues with environmental regulations. They cause poor engine emissions at idle while in gear, since they will not disengage when not in motion, and basically lug the engine (at least that is my understanding). Maybe the US get DSG because of California....

If a diesel saves 30% fuel, that means 30% less extraction, 30% less of oil to transport to refinery, 30% less to refine, then 30% less to transport and hold at the gas station. Now diesel's are not for everybody and they are not going to well for what everybody needs a car to do. Although considering VW has had 4motion diesels for so long makes us in NA feel very neglected and left out with what would be an awesome car.

I agree diesels serve their purpose and obviously their popularity in markets like this (I have a 120d and a 535d M Sport living in my building and a MK7 GTD usually parked on the street) show they can sell very well in all sorts of ranges. I think there has always been an image issue in NA as most people associate them with trucks, both pickup and semi, and the tech has some a long way since then. This whole dieselgate thing has of course set things back a long way and I wish the EPA would loosen up a little as this seems like the worst automotive crime in history, but here it is already long forgotten.
I don't quite understand the attraction to Diesel. I think the real fans are people that have an old diesel which were awesome. I like my car but not enough to buy another one I don't think. Fuel mileage is hardly better than a gas motor (6.9 L/100 although has more power which is nice), even though I do a lot of highway. Then there's regen, exhaust fluid, faulty exhaust flaps, etc. some high pressure fuel pumps supposedly exploding.
I always heard so much on this forum and how great they were which made me want one. I wish I would have bought a 2.0T instead.
Also, petty, but I hate the smell, how long it takes to warm up in the winter, and that anything below -15 I need to plug it in or it may not start.
If you want a wagon you don't have much selection, and VW is probably the lowest price point so not sure what would be out there to compete. I guess there's Subaru? been a while since I shopped wagons.
The new 1.8T is a wicked little engine. Sure, a TDI would be nice, but it wouldn't stop be from buying one. The fact that they're going to offer these with a 6-speed rather than a 5-speed like the regular Golf is even better!

These of course are based on people actually knowing what engine they have an being able to input it correctly as well, but I figured it was a better representation of fuel MPG then what is wishful thinking number they throw on the car.
I haven't plugged in my alh for years now, always starts just needs a min or two on those cold mornings. Can't say how the new ones go though as I have never owned one or witnessed one trying to start that cold. They do take a little longer to warm up, with my burn my a$$ seat warmer though I don't notice much.
