  • 2005 TDI Passat - Starting Issue

    Hi Everyone,

My brother in law's folks are having some issues with their 2005 Passat TDI. It is having some starting issues as it will continually crank but fails to start unless you put down the pedal. I vagcom'd the car and no codes are present. The car has a newer battery. Car was taken to a "diesel repair specialist" and they did not find anything but then when engine was warm, the issues persist.

    Thanks.

Sticky EGR? Somewhere around post 82, and thousands in parts getting thrown at my car under warranty, South Centre Fine Cars figured out my starting issue. It was the EGR, but it was never out of spec while hooked up to their computer. Finally it worked out that it gave a bad reading, after months....

Thanks guys. Would the EGR throw a code? When I scanned the car, it was completely clean. Not a single DTC.

Thanks Stefan. Did they end up just changing it or just cleaning? it is weird that if you keep cranking and step on the pedal, it will eventually start but only on the 3rd time. They took the car to a diesel specialist here in Edmonton and they said there was no problem. His folks drove the car home and then when the car was warm, problem persisted. I thought it might be glow plugs but if the car is warm, I would not think it would be a glow plug issue. EGR valve is not cheap on these cars!

I would personally pull the egr and clean it, or have someone clean it...easier place to start considering what Stephan went through.

My issue was only when warm. Cold and hot starts were fine. It was after a 5 minute drive that it really acted up. For the shop to see it out of spec, they pretty much just lucked out and had it on a scope at the right time. In most cases, the service adviser would take it for a spin and see the issue, but once the mech got to it, the car was cool and there was no issue.

It is a pricey part to swap without solid evidence of the issue. They swapped mine in the end.
