  • Golf r underbody panel

So I was just driving to Edmonton and I started hearing a flapping noise from under the car...
I stopped and it looks like the underbody cover / plastic lining on the driver side was hanging from one spot. I removed it but now I need to replace that thing.

I went to vw in Edmonton and they quoted me $350 installed (it's 8 bolts) not under warranty.

    Two problems here:
    - ca. I drive without it for a while?
    - it looks really expensive for a piece of plastic under the car. Any suggestion on where to get it cheaper and install it myself?

    Cheers

Is the underpanel broken? Or just missing clips? We keep a pretty good assortment at the shop here, or I can get the ones you need specifically.

The panel broke off. I now have just the crews in place and no panel.

So just buy the panel. Drive car up on ramps and replace.

EDIT: Is this the under tray under the engine?

This is what I will probably do.

It's the plastic liner running on the under side of the car

You don't really need it. Just the engine bay gets a little dirtier.

Without the "bellypads" you'll see a lot more sand, road grime etc that can cause issues later...I personally lost mine a year after I bought my car, and replaced it with an Evolution aluminum skid plate for about the same price....there are those that don't like them, but I'm also low and its saved my oil pan several times.

I would do as George is suggesting and replace it with an aluminum skidplate. Just offers better protection. It wont snap like the plastic ones.
I haven't had skidplates on most of my cars and really its not a big deal. If you don't want to spend money on another one it's not imperative that you do.

I have fixed many of those panels. Just need a drill and a few zip ties! and its good as new. I could have a look for you as well if you dont have them.

If not a new metal skid plate is gonna run around 300

Maybe its just me, but how would a skid plate fix his problem?

My point is, if he is going to replace it, for about the same money he can put an aluminum one on that is more durable and offers more protection.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the op talking about this piece? If so, a skid plate would do absolutley nothing. Also, skid plates are lame.

The broken piece is not under the engine so it's not really a skid plate. It's more an under car lining that run the length of the car to better the flow and protect the body from projections.

I just got it ordered and will probably put it on this week end
