Hrm guess I've been living in a cave. I hear the radio ads all the time but they always say "Onstar is available in many GM brands" or something like that. Wonder if you can get it after the fact (not for me).

Chalk another "Money Grab" up for the Automakers.

OnStar is available on 51 GM models, as well as on models sold by Volkswagen, Audi, and Honda's Acura brand.

Even though safety sells the system, it's more often used to combat stupidity. OnStar can remotely unlock car doors in case the driver has locked the keys in the car. Or, as in the case of "Tales From the Road" subject Judy Bass of Bloomington, Ind., if a cocker spaniel named Ruby locks the keys in the car. OnStar fields 7,000 emergency calls a month, a quarter of the 28,000 requests it gets every month to unlock doors.

Mommy's "Gran Turismo" - E70 X5M in Black Sapphire Metallic

            Why am I not surprised

The Passat we test drove had it. I think it's like a $450 option but comes standard on pretty much anything GLX above. I'm not really sure it's worth the money, the safety would be nice but I think the only thing that would get me to shell out that kind of money would be if they could shut the car down and stuff in the event it gets stolen. (and plus I've never locked my keys in my car )

Well, that's true I guess, might be good for resale but don't you still have to pay for the service?

Ahem... that's $500 plus $24.95/mth for the "Basic" plan or $1,700 over 4 years. And to think, that gives you no concierge, no driving directions and no outgoing calls. (ie. add on $360 for 720 minutes of talk time over 4 years... gee, what a deal?)

Besides, if my airbags deploy and some chick comes on that thing and says "Do you require assistance Sir?" Be rest assured, that freakin' console is going to get punched repeatedly!

Arrgh... so much rage, and nowhere to channel it!

My dad has On-Star in his Grand Prix GTP. At first he paid the service fee, but then he realized that he would probably never need it. So he stopped paying the fee. His GM dealership said he can still use the emergency features for free - on his, there is an emergency contact button that you can use in the event of an emergency, and it also will still work if it detects an accident (airbags go off, etc).
