  • Mk4 strut mount problem....

So I installed a Bilstein / H&R setup in my Jetta about 8 months ago. When I did my install I put in all new hardware (Bolts, caps, bushings and bearings) I ran the VR setup as I thought it would put up with the abuse a bit better. While I was doing the install I did a full cleaning of the wheel wells and there was no rust. I also Armor Coated the wheel well also. Being new to Alberta and learning how shifty the roads are I am re thinking my setup!!

Which checking my fluids and replacing a fuse from my stereo I noticed this!!!!

So what are you thoughts? Both sides did the same thing the bushings are OEM ones from the dealer. Call it a fluke or a failed part???

I had similar when I first lowered my Mkiv Golf...if its not centered perfectly, it will punch up through one side of the strut tower.

Strut tower looks like the top is bent out, or am I seeing things?

        Re: Mk4 strut mount problem....

Tower is definitely bent out, are you sure you installed the bushing the correct way? There is also no difference between the mk4 suspension accessory kits (bushing/bearing) AFAIK only thing different is the OEM spring rates and heights.

If it's on both sides, I doubt it's a coincidence. Probably time to take that apart to see what happened. If that goes anymore through you may end up with a hole in your hood.

It really really looks like you put them in upside down, that metal guiding ring flares out on the bottom side (bearing side) as shown here:

^that is what I think too, the mounts should be able to self center if they're installed the right side up.

Now that I see the picture of the mount I think you guy's are correct they do look to be installed backwards. I remember when I did the install I mirrored what was in there before :(

Looks like I will be buying more tools and tackling this job asap!! Will post up pictures of my screw-up lol

Odd thing is that it was pretty quiet no real noise. Only difference now is that my car is sitting higher :(

And the ride should be smoother and tighter
