Is changing the air filter on our cars as easy as I think it is or what?

Picked up a new filter today, just need to pop it in.

Actually, I have a k&n panel filter. It is from the previous owner of my car and it sitting in my garage somewhere. He removed it from the car when it in for servicing and he never reinstalled it.

But after using an oil filter in my old VR6 and the maf going bad (a quick $700) I've decided to stick with the good ol paper filter.

Right you were guys. Easy as pie.

Hoooo boy, was that filter ever dirty. Noticed a little bit of the orange rubber seal poking out of the air box after changing it. Normal?

            Re: Air filter change

I read one VW mechanic online saying that the problem with MAF's dying isn't usually the K&N filter itself, its the lack of keeping it clean and general maintenance - people put them in and forget to clean them.

I almost fell over when I read my manual stating the paper filter should be good for more than a year or 50,000Km. If you take it out and can't see the sun through the paper, its too damn dirty.

You may want to take another 5 min. and clean the snowscreen in the intake snorkle, is your car has one. Works wonders for air volume.

Is this snorkle between the airbox and the driverside wheel well?

Yea, an overlubed k&n would make short work of your maf, and to be honest, that might have been the problem with my last car. I would like to know how they came up with that 50'000km cleaning. Remember cleaning my old one, after 'bout 10'000km it was filthy.

yes, you'll probably have to take your battery out to get to it though.
