  • Fuel leak from tank

I have had a strange issue where I fill up my TDI's tank and then about 1-2 Liters of diesel pours out from underneath.

It's only happened twice, but that's more than enough for me.

The first time I topped up my tank and I though maybe it leaked out some vent because i filled up too much.
The second time my tank was not full, I pressed the knob to vent the tank, and it just dumped fuel.

I'm guessing something's up with the tank/fuel vent but I didn't find information on what the tank, filler, and vents assembly look like or how to access them.

Maybe not part of the problem but my fuel gauge is completely off too.

    Anyone got some information?

Is your pump/sender still being held down? I have seen diesel come out the top when the seal is not doing its job. Only 2 things that come to mind, is the hose clamps at the connection of the filler/vent and the tank and the sender seal.

you can access it by lifting the back seat up. quite easy, if you didn't already know.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

I will check the seal on the sender pump but I don't think that's it, I don't smell diesel inside the cabin. I do know how to check it though, Had to dismantle the entire pump when I got some algae in there and clogging up my lift pump.

I don't think you would smell it assuming the cap under the seat is on correctly. Since you have pulled it out already I would start there first.

Just an update, I did check the lift pump under the seat and to my surprise the whole thing had popped out, the black screw on ring was completely off. Good call guys!

I would never have thought it possible for this to happen, is this common?

Since I have to fill up this week ( haven't had to fill up since I posted this at the beginning of the month lol), I'll be filling it up this Saturday and testing it again to see if there are any other leaks.

Have not seen the complete unit come off but I have seen 2 cars where the gasket has failed causing a leak
