  • Aftermarket head unit

I want to upgrade my head unit in my Passat because it is the base unit and I am looking at something like this as I want to keep the cost down and can not afford the RNS-510.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations with aftermarket units?
Been driving VAG for longer then allot of the members have been alive

I've been searching for one also, and you're right for the price of OEM RNS you can get a much nicer Kenwood or similar unit with hands free Bluetooth, nicer faster CPU and a bigger screen. When going double din you'll need a double din fit kit, a radio antenna adapter and a PAC C2R VW2 harness or similar so can utilize the steering wheel controls.

That seems like a good deal I think Dan EDOTHUG installed a similar unit. If you go for it - do report back with a review. I'm looking for a similar navi unit for a mk5 Jetta. Good luck

        Aftermarket head unit

Google up the ans-810. It's the an awesome aftermarket alternative to the oem units,
For less than half the price, and does twice the stuff, and plug and play. I believe they are 500$ new. I found mine on vortex for 300 in excellent condition.

I too have been wondering about the latest generation of OEM style head units. With the early generations, lots of people complained about the OS being slow and chunky; the newer ones seem to be better (faster). The biggest difference amongst the units is the processing power and the operating system.

So, which is better windows CE 6.0 or Android 4.2.2?

another option and not bad for pricing. reviews seem generally positive. i have an RCD-510 and want to upgrade as well. the Clarion that the OP linked looks nice too.

I bought one of those direct from China touch screen stereos for my Jetta.....Install was OK but I had to also get the CanBus adapter to make it work. The stereo has been great for the two - three years I have had it. I really wanted it for the in dash GPS, the bluetooth plus the USB jack. I paid just under $300 for mine.
