        Re: Custom angel eyes!

OK, so is anyone interested in an angel eye day for the few of us that want to try it? It seems to make sense that we do it on a Sunday... angels and all. I can volunteer my garage (heated) but the house is still a no go until they finish repairs ater the fire. I think I'd take the opportunity to joey mine while the lens is off too.

Anyone interested? I can supply Simon with beer if he's willing to give us some tips.

Yah I'll come buy and help you guys out, if nothing else you can see exactly what I did. Might take more than the one day though, couple hours to make the rings and let them set, couple hours for the silicone to hold the rings on dry, and then a couple hours to let the casing dry before putting on the car.

            Here's what I wanna buy!!!

                        Re: Custom angel eyes!

OK, so am I hosting this thing? Do we want to do this right away, or wait a little bit. I have a dremmel, and we can probably heat up the rods in my oven, but my house is pretty much gutted after the fire. If we can wait until the first or second week in April, my insurance adjuster assures me I will have my house back.

In the mean time, I'll go by Radio Shack and check into LEDs and the curtain rods. Maybe Bill and I should just snag a couple from work, they're about 8 feet long! Anyway, I think they make LEDs that change colour depending on the voltage. If I can find some of these, it might be as simple as swapping resistors to get them to change colours, without having to take apart the headlights. Simon, do the resistors get hot enough to be a concern when you hardwired yours to your euroswitch? I'll likely wire mine in to the city lights like you described, but not sure what do do about the resistors, and if heat will be any kind of issue.

The way I did it, if you want to do the the same way required 2 LED's per ring, one on each end of the rod. Thus you'll need 8 LED's total for the 4 rings. Each LED needs to be tapped into the city lights, and what I did for this was use radio shack wire taps.

$1.50 seperately, or like a dozen for $10 or something. Buy a few extra's if you can, as we broke quite a few, they're somewhat flimsy. I suppose you could solder them in there if you want to, but I didn't think it was necessary. If you do solder them in, I would probably recommend using a resistor just so your LED doesnt burn out.

For the euroswitch, the factory wiring on the switch makes the middle setting do just city lights, and the full on position is citylights/normal lights. So when I pulled my city light bulb, I have just AE's for middle switch, and AE's/Full lights in ON position. I would recommend doing something else though, because you can still see the AE's slightly at night time in ON position. To remedy this, I can think of two things. 1) Find the wiring diagram of a euro switch and perhaps rewire it so full on doesnt turn on city lights, or 2) wire it into your fog lights and pull the fog bulbs. euroswitches have the extra position for fog lights.

                              Re: Custom angel eyes!

So a list of everything you'll need:

-some clear rod that can be bent (if heated).
-a knive/exacto to make grooves in the plastic rod to refract light
-8 LED's (colour of your choice)
                              -8 wiretaps
                              -maybe 6 feet of wire
-soldering iron or some tool to make an indentation into the end of the rod for the LED to sit in.
-tube of silicone to glue LED's into rod. circles onto lights. and the case closed.
-masking tape to hold the rings to the lights while they dry

                              I think that's all you'll need.

Oh, and I leave to go back to Manitoba end of april, so earlier the better.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have the micro DEs so I guess I'll have to decide if I want to hook up angel eyes to the front fog, and fogs to the rear fog setting, or just run angels and fogs off the same wire. If I do this, the only time I'm running the angel eyes will be when I need the fogs. If visibility is poor, I doubt any copper will notice the tinted rings around my headlights. Is that why you recommend a different setting than city lights, coppers will give you grief for the angel eyes? How to the BMW's get around this? White angel eyes would be OK, but the tinted ones are illegal? More info please Simon
