  • MKIV Steering Wheel Shake

In need of some semi professional help here guys. Story goes as such. Car was fine with winters on, no shake at all everything good. Put my old summers on while waiting for new tires. The old tires were terrible so it's hard to say whether the problem arrived with them or not. Went to fountain tire in Sundre here to get new summer tires put on. As soon as the new tires were on I immediately noticed a severe steering wheel shake above 110km/hr on the highway. It took an abnormal amount of time for the tire shop to mount and balance so I had Chad at Kal tire take a look today. Tires were pretty far out, Chad corrected the balance. Unfortunately the severe shake is still there.

Things I've checked, bushings and joints for movement, all seem OK, not sure how to check ball joints but would they lead to a high speed shake? Suspension and LCA bushings are only a couple years old. CV boots, no rips or tears. Still have oetiker clamps on them so I can't really check for grease. Other than that I'm going to remove my front spacers and go for a drive to see if fountain tire maybe f'd them up when they did their thing. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks guys.

If it's wheel specific and the balance is good, your wheels need to be road forced. They will still balance fine, but will spin out round. A tire shop with a road force machine will fix it up for you, but it'll probably be expensive since the tire needs to be spun around on the rim.

I guarantee this is your problem.

Have you gotten an alignment? Maybe the wheel bearing(s) have gone, I know mine made a noise and a shake that went away after replacing the bearing.

Speedoptions in the NE is the cheapest place I've found with a Road Force balancer.

Took the front spacers off. Problem is 95% gone. Fucking seriously, I can honestly see fountain tire in a small town that deals with mostly trucks screwing it. From now on I will honestly drive to Calgary to see Chad. Is there any way to specifically check spacers? I'm going to scrub them clean and look for pry marks too I think.

I recommond spec r motorsports they have road force balance, but I think it's your spacers needs a clean, that was the problem with my steering shake sometime ago...
