Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
I keep a couple spare coils in the trunk - but you might want newer revision? If you want to buy one or trade me a new one later, up to you.
(Coilpacks are VR6, Coils are 1.8Ts - or did you turbo a VR6?)

Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
Originally posted by seanfournieri bought two coils, replaced bad ones (so i thought) and now the codes are being thrown on the two stock coils. I've changed them around trying to narrow down which are culprit but i guess all 4 have quit on me at the same time. Wierd thing is it only does it at high load or boost. i'm freaking stumped and have exhausted the vortex resources...

Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
Actually Ryan, I just whipped out an old textbook.
Knock and detonation used to mean the same thing. Detonation now means a steady state combustion situation where the flame front propagates at supersonic speeds.
Knock is simply audible autoignition. Autoignition is the spontaneuos ignition of gases. Imagine a combustion chamber where the spark plug ignites gas. Now imagine the flame front as it continues on to burn the rest of the fuel in the chamber. That flame front, because of the sudden increase in temperature, creates a pressure wave. Sometimes that pressure wave gets to a point where the temperature and pressure increase causing the fuel to ignite on its own. The ignition can occur somewhere else in the combustion chamber. Now you've got two or more expanding pressure fronts and they collide. Not a pretty sight.Last edited by 1.8Trip; 03-23-2004, 12:58 AM.

on inspection of the old plugs they seemed to have a normal burn pattern. Perhaps on the side of overheating? ack. i wish i was god right now.

Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
If a coil blows you can usually tell by looking at it - it will have a small burn where the electricity arc'd down the side rather than the center. At least mine all did, as did the ones I looked at while lurking in the repair bays at Northland.

Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
ok, I am by no means an expert on this topic but is it possible that the plugs just can't take that kind of atmosphere in the cylinder with all the pressure and forced air? My Corrado (ok I know most of you are sick of hearing about it) used special plugs due to the heat and pressure. basically they had 4 blocks on the side with a point out the center, no gapping or anything. Just thought I'd throw out the possibility. (they were pricey too $32 each).Jay

Re: coilpack #2 is messed up.
4 new ignition coils. Problem seems to have disappeared *knock on wood*. It just seems REALLY wierd how 4 coils would die at the same time... like, geez, what the hell are the chances or is like if one fails each subsequent coil will fail too?
anyways, here is what my steering wheel view is like...
