quick question...

i have a beetle that needs a mechanical inspection before i can be insured, how do i get the car to the inspection if i can't get a transit pass without insurance?

seems like i have a "what came first, the chicken or the egg" type of problem.

Ask your insurance company for a temporary card or whatever it's called. That's how I got my E30 home from Kelowna and to/from the inspection. I drove it home with the plates and registration from my Volvo and then got a transit permit once I got home for the inspection since the plates had to go back on the Volvo.

Any registry place can provide you with a 1-3 day temporary in-transit permit paper. You stick the paper on your window and it is considered registered. You also need to inform your insurance company and get the vehicle covered by insurance.

It used to be that in Alberta you could swap the plates temporarily from your current insured vehicle and this would "register" the in-transit vehicle, this is no longer acceptable, if you get pulled over you can get a fine for driving without registration and will get one for driving without insurance!

If you are in an accident you will be personally liable if you don't have insurance.

^ This. Call insurer... get insurance. Go to registry... get in-transit permit. Go to mechanic shop... get inspection. Piece of cake.

i found a different insurance place... got that covered now. Stupid Statefarm
but the registry is having trouble finding the vin... any advice? I'm trying to avoid the OOP inspection. The car was last registered in edmonton about 8-10 years ago.

For information about the car registered more than 5 years ago than they need to call the main registry bureau to get that information. Any registry should be able to make the call and get it.

ya, they gave me some paper to fill out and we'll try and make that call tomorrow... the gov office was already closed for the day.
i'm really hoping they find it, because oop inspections will not be fun on a car this old.
