  • Removing RTV?

I took off the side skirts and the PO stuck them on with RTV.

I've read that ethyl lactate will remove it but couldn't find out if this will harm the clearcoat?

Any other products you guys know of that can remove RTV?

Permatex makes a rtv silicone dissolver. Also you can get silicone remover at Rona or HD in the paint stripper section. I have not used the Permatex stuff but i have used silicone remover and it works great.

I checked it out and that permatex stuff is a tiny 90ml bottle with a brush applicator. I'll have to buy a dozen to do my entire side skirts and area on the car.

There has to be something that comes in a bigger bottle?

The silicone remover I bought at Rona a few years back was in 1 liter bottles.

anything that will take silicone off will damage paint and plastic as well.

Actually the silicone remover that I have used does not damage paint or plastic.

                Re: Removing RTV?

Goo Gone was not a success. I went to a nearby Home Depot yesterday end but the clerk said they didn't have it. I'll try a bigger HD today.

I didn't want to start another thread so another question: I am trying to remove the front door and there is one 12 point/triple square bolt that has such small clearance I can't get my current socket to fit. I checked all the usual palces (CT, HD, Rona, Lowes, LeeValley) but no one has them. Where did you guys buy a stubby M8 12 point bit?

When you don't have room, you take the bit and use a wrench on it.

Good call Stefan, last time I was at princess auto I got these:
                        http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/H...-Set/8306813.p

@Red I'm having issues because they are 3" long, it won't fit between the bolt and the door frame.

They didn't have the stubby sockets at princess auto when I bought these bits, I'll go pick those sockets up today too.

                          Re: Removing RTV?

I picked up the silicone remover from Home depot but it's not working. Looks like I'm going to have to use a razor blade, a steady hand and some luck to not damage the paint.
