  • Fender liner clean mod?

So my current fenders are rusted to @$%& because of them getting so much gunk in there over the past year (probably due to living in a tree lined neighbourhood and all my trip to and from Calgary).

I just got some "new" fenders and fender liners but I am hesitating on putting the liners back on. The rain tray dumps right into the area where the liner meets with the fender and the leaves and dirt just stay stuck there.

So I was thinking of either not putting the fender liner back on, or maybe cutting it like this:

    Any opinions?

that's kind of the typical rust spots on the mk4's and 5's.

I guess it's kind of a trade off.
With the liners you will have crap and water just sitting in there, while if you take the liners out, you will have stuff that just keeps hitting it there. I don't run liners in the fronts, just because I drive low, I'll probly put them back in for the winter.

I like to pull the liners every year or two and blast out the wheel wells with a pressure washer. Than apply some rust inhibiting spray for good measure.

I've put a coat of rubberized undercoating all along the inner fender well (Home Depot).

Put on a coat of rust remover and protector on the frame.

I'll put on the liner and cut out that hole and hope that it helps keep thing clean from now on.
At the least I'll be able to wash it out easily from now on.

i would consider cutting it out but i would also make it an access door. that way you get the protection from regular driving/use, as well as a handy way to clean it out every so often.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

When I pulled my fender liner off there was nothing
I think it's quite easy to keep it clean unless you drive it in a dirty alley in the rain everyday.. You could maybe cut that two screw part off and replace with metal mesh? So larger particles can't hit the paint, and it'll be easy to wash off the dirt.

              It's not easy lol^
To be honest we are all pretty much doomed to the plight of the fender/wheel well rust of VW/Audi.
If they did a tough undercoating from the factory we would have a chance but yes, best bet is the rubberized stuff and rust inhibitor. But as soon as rust starts it's very difficult to keep it away

Maybe someone should start selling plastic aftermarket fenders.

It's all fine and dandy until your quarter panel falls off. I run no fenderliners in the GLI and have just gravel guarded inside the arches.
