  • Electrical issues

Interesting situation happening with my car, i have a theory, just want to know everybody else's thoughts

    Back Story
All of my 12V switched accessories (head unit, airride system etc) are run from the 75X terminal under the dash
GLI sat over the winter in my heated garage above freezing but battery was disconnected
Battery is very old and i have a heavy draw on my system so it is basically pooched
Few days ago i got the airride system installed again and boosted the car multiple times and the battery wouldn't hold a charge. On the very last time i turned the car off and switched it to accessory to air the car out and the car was acting a bit weird, the battery was dead but it would turn accessory devices on for a second then turn them off as soon as any load was drawn from the system.

Installed new battery last night and this happened:

    When the engine is Off
When the engine is off and the key is in "accessory position" all of the devices switch on and work perfectly normally. Battery has a charge and airride works, radio works, gauge works, etc.

When I turn over the engine
As soon as i start cranking over the engine the load reduction relay kills all the 75X terminal devices and the car turns over just fine.
The 75X terminal turns back on for a fraction of a second before dying completely.
I checked every fuse and they are all good.

My theory is that the ignition switch is pooched. Faulty ignition switch might be due to the constant on/off clicking that happened during the very last time i tried to air the car out with the dead battery. This is also what pulls in the coil on the load reduction relay so it might not be releasing when the engine is turned on.
Load reduction relay is still functioning too btw

    ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE

Hmmm.. very weird indeed. Ignition switch makes sense i guess, its a good place to start.
If not id say theres something wrong with the 75x terminal

I find that if I have my charger on the car and the compressor try's to run it constantly clicks on accessory. The fact it won't come off accessory says switch to me.

Also worth checking for poor ground, a poor ground makes strange things happen to electrical systems.

You are running too much current through that switch. Have the accessory line turn on mains powered relays. You will be much safer that way.

I don't think two extra accessory loads that are under an amp each would cause a big problem, it also is weird because I changed zero loads from all last season and the year before that too.
I am going to start with the ignition switch and go from there

All depends if there is a surge current when things power up. The arcing can burn out contacts.

jump the starter and see what happens. I've seen alt make some crazy **** like this happen

For an airride ECU switched power and radio switched power it shouldn't have a high inrush current at all.

Car runs when boosted. My thought is that the ignition switch is not allowing the alternator contact to charge my battery so it is dying all the time. Still seems like an ignition switch issue and the thought has also been confirmed by Dennisgli on vortex (knows his ****) because my turn signals and headlights don't work either

Compressor for air ride is wired to battery? It's easy to check if it's the switch. Grab a meter and check the wires off the switch. You'll need to remove the column shroud which can be a ***** if the car has ESP, there are 5 screws holding it on. The accessory wire is black with a red stripe off the ignition switch. It should show 12volts at accessory or run, and drop out at crank. Start there.
