1999 Jetta misfire problems

Hello, my friends 1999 (mk3) Jetta is having a very weird issue. its an ABA, bone stock. normally id just say replace plugs, wires, distributor cap etc. but it only misfires in 3,4, and 5th gear. Itll start to sputter in 2nd gear. In neutral or first the car runs perfect. The only code is P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected. if you clear the code it wont come back untill you go into third gear..

I would say check all the basics. Sounds like a misfire under load
