  • Clutch help

The GTI I picked up a week ago was getting ready for inspection. Took it around the block to diagnose some suspension noise before taking it in. Everything was fine until I started it back up to move it into the garage. Would not move, as soon as I threw into first gear I heard a loud grinding noise. Ive put quite sometime and money already, and I don't want to keep dumping money into it. I want to say its a clutch, clutch component but my experience is limited. Advice and/or help would be appreciated.

(as soon as I heard that noise I was gonna list it...but I thought to go this route before making any decisions)

    Thanks.

Not saying this is your problem, but I had a mk4 JETTA once, went to back in my driveway, car would not move at all forward or reverse, diff grenaded and blew up the tranny.

      Re: Clutch help

If a clutch goes generally you can't get in or out of gear. Grinding noise getting into first without having issues getting into the gear will be transmission related. From the info you have given, I would assume its transmission problems. Sorry for the bad news

          Try adjusting the shifter linkages.

The locking sounds like it could be linkages but it wouldn't usually grind if it's linkages, would it?

I hope it's not trans issue.
Anything I can do here to be sure?
There's also a rattling that goes and comes when step on and off the clutch.

Try the linkage alignment, you might get lucky.
The rattling is the throw out bearing based on the clutch being engaged and released. It also may be a clutch release lever ( the one the Slave pushes on, assuming it's a o2j) I had one crack on my old beater mk4 , it gave similar issues

                  Re: Clutch help

Maybe we should clarify when the grinding noise happened. Did it only happen going in to gear, or did the noise happen driving in gear?

The grinding noise happens if you force it into gear

                      Re: Clutch help

You have to rev match to downshift into first, the synchronizers don't like dealing with so much stress, and one day it will stress out and grind. But do try aligning the shift linkages first, takes ten minutes at max.

                          Re: Clutch help

Forcing into gear could be syncros, but my guess is the clutch fork and throw out bearing need replacement. Cheap parts, wouldn't do one without the other, but the transmission has to get pulled to do the job. Had issues getting into gear + grinding with my tdi. A spring in the clutch disc required me to pull everything apart and so I replaced the fork and throw out bearing as well. Car shifted perfect after that and I only replaced the clutch disc not the pressure plate so the clutch was not my grinding issue.

Good luck, the alignment may help, but I would keep in mind the trans will be pulled.

Will it go into any other gears?
Does it go into gear with the engine shut off?

It goes into all the gears with the car on and off, but when the car is started it will make that grinding noise regardless of gear I throw it in.
