  • Brake Rotors - 2004 Jetta TDI

So I have a front brake issue....After braking I get a metallic sound from the from end. If I apply the brakes the sound goes away. I pull off one of the front wheels and I see lots of brake pad remaining but on the inner surface of the front brake rotor there is only a small shinny worn area and a large rough rusty area. I am thinking this is due to a sticky caliper? I am able to pry the piston back without any trouble. I have some new pads but I wanted to replace the front rotors too (rather than just get them turned). I see that Canadian Tire has some ATE brand rotors on sale starting tomorrow....Buy 1 get 1 free. They are calling them a Premium rotor and they have the elliptical groove in them. So I have a few questions -

    1) Does my issue sound like a sticky caliper or perhaps the pads are hanging up in the caliper a bit.
    2) Has anybody used the ATE brake rotors before?
    3) Am I better off with just getting stock rotors, the ATE ones (they are half price) or some other aftermarket rotors...I had no complaints with the stock braking performance.

    Thx

Sounds like one pad is damaged. I had a simmilar thing happen on a mk3 I had. I think a combination of hardly driving it (5000km a year), and crappy rotors cause them to rust easily. Over time, the typical thin ring of rust the very outer edge of a rotor gets started to grow, and the pad wore along with it. It was strange. Very little contact surface in the end, which generates a lot of heat from extra friction applied to such a narrow strip to get propper braking. Not sure what would cause this in your case.

Get a couple prices from guys on here first. Natty54 got me my last set of rotors for a pretty good price. He has several OEM and OEM spec options.

**didnt see you were in edmonton... not sure who to ask there.

Get GEOMET coated rotors from ecs, mine are 1.5 years old and still no rust in the vents or hub, definitely worth that extra five six dollars for better brake ventilation and looks.

You should also check the barrels/sliders to make sure they're greased properly and free of debris...I had this same issue last year.

I am running those ATE rotors on my Jetta right now. Had them for 4 years so far and 80000 kms on them right now. Still look good and work great for me. If you can get them on sale I'd role with them.

those ATE rotors are fine. you have what some would call "lot rot".
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

Sigh.....so I go into Canadian Tire to buy the ATE rotors only to find out that there are 3 different size rotors used on the 2004 Jetta - 280, 288 and 310 (I think). Seems that there is no way to tell without pulling the wheel and measuring them.

Get part number from dealer and look up specs. They will be able to do it by VIN.

Oh, thats it ? I guess I assumed there was more to this like a mid year change or something..... the above should have been obvious too even a canadian tire parts guy.

Most catalogs would narrow it down once the engine size is made but some still show the options

                        rotors you want are: 1J0 615 301P or 1J0 615 301M
