  • well WTF.. stupid guage!!!

today i receive my 'fix' from 42dd for my LED.. well i hook it up.. basically its just a resistor heatshrunk with plug-in adaptors.. i coulda made this myself if i knew the ohmage for the resistor
anyways i hook it up and test it out.. my LED will only light up 3 LEDs/9!!!!!!!! WTF!! i put my old blue bulb in over the weekend and it lights up fine and no dimming issues. I was suspecting my taps at the dimmer switch are 'off' but I don't think so.. so i think my 'perfect led' is perfect toasted crap! so i'm gonna email 42 and try to get a replacement for it.. if the next one doesn't work 'right' i'm selling this VDO and ordering an omori asap

Yeah Ryan, I emailed 42 yesterday and they sent out a new LED this morning. So props to 42 for their great service once again but I am still afraid of what the end result is gonna be after hearing about this.

they sent you a whole new LED? really! neil i think its the guage setup that overheats the LED's so if/once you get the new one put the old bulb in your overhead and it should color match and hopefully not overheat.. thats what i'ma do.. and if not omori here i come!!

Can you drill a vent hole in the back of the gauge, something like that to cool it down?

The Omori gauge looks nice, but I don't know if its worth the money.

well i'm so peeved on this VDO i'm honestly gonna just break down and order the omori from that shop flanders posted.. i think the resistor on the board overheats because its all covered up and sealed under a window.. like 9LEDS on a circuit board all covered up i mean.

Just one resistor? well that is the *bleepen* problem right there! Never ever run one resistor for multiple LED's. Some LED's tend to hog more current then others over time and will draw more current therefor burn all the other ones out let alone run hot. LED's do not use much current (usually 20mA) plus resistors are dirt cheap so and product that does not use one per LED is crap in my opinion. If you want to drop it off with me I will find out what value the resistor is and rewire it so it will work right.

Yea, well plus you need to current limit the LED with a resistor. If you hook it up straight to power it will most likely burn out for sure.

Don't those Blue LED's require more voltage than standard LED's too? (in other words, won't turn on if not enough voltage is run to them? I think they need 5 or 6 Volts)

I may be talking out my but since I haven't seen the guage, but that's what I figure.

                        Re: well WTF.. stupid guage!!!

Most LED's will turn on with a lower voltage but will be dimmer and unreliable. Most blue LEDs have a higher voltage drop but it depends on the manufacture/size/etc.

                          Re: well WTF.. stupid guage!!!

Okay well today I got bored and decided to test the LED bulb holder and the whole light itself. I ran a wire from my fusepanel and used my 12v cig surround as a grounding point and well only 3 LEDS out of 9 will light up.. so i get pissed and actually take the whole thing apart.. there are 2 resistors running up to the 9 LEDs.. i forget the color coding so i don't know the ohms (its been 3 years since i was in school)
so i look on the circuit board and nothing is burnt out but some/alot of the LEDs have a yellowish hue in them which makes me think well 6/9 are burnt out!!!! 42 still hasn't gotten back to me on this thing.. so i put my old blue one back in for the time being.. sigh......................

woot. 42 is sending me out a new LED. they assume my old one burn't out somehow which kinda sucks.
