  • glow plug light not working

got that recall done at least a year ago, noticed this winter that the car don't like to start if i don't plug it in. further noticing that the glow plug light don't come on and stay on like it did before. If it does come on its a half second. Is there a relay or fuse for them. When i have a day off ill cycle the ignition and see if power is actually going to the plugs.

    thanks

First I would scan the car and see if any codes show up. Kinda sounds like a coolant temp sensor to me.

There is a relay for the glow plugs - location #12

I've read about the coolant sensor. Is this the same sensor that tells you the coolant temp on your dash cause it works ?

It is the same sensor but it has 2 outputs, one to the ecu, one to the dash. Just cause one works doesn't mean the other is working.

If you have vagcom you can go into engine and watch the coolant temp rise as it is warming up after sitting overnight. Compare that to the reading in instruments, if they are more than a few degrees apart, that might just be your problem. You'll have to flip back and forth a few times.

Re: glow plug light not working

I wouldn't say the reading on the dash is close to accurate though. Everything I have read and seen in vagcom is that the dash is more for show and can be out by as much as 10'c. People don't want to see the coolant guage fluctuating, so VW made the dash only show large swings in temp.

Since this is a starting issue, with vagcom after a cold night check the ambient, coolant, and fuel temp's in vagcom before starting the car. They should all be within a couple degree's and will either help or eliminate a bunch of things. Starting and watching the coolant temp is just a waste of time and diesel as the glow plugs are reading from a cold engine, not one heated up.

If all those sensors are fine and no faults could be a number of others things. I have a 2005 passat, sam issue to a point. No faults, new plugs with tune, new gp relay, starts rough down to -8'c, then starts worse after that.

@ Ben have you checked the timing? You can also change the glow plug time via vagcom

Well I might have to do a search if someone up here in Fort Mac has the vagcom program and hook up cause I don't. Atleast I have a few things to look into now.

              thanks

Checked and adjusted the timing, but it was only .5 out. I am going to pull apart the EGR in the next few days, and replace the battery and clean the grounds. Jason vagcom will be your friend as long as you own a vw, would highly recommend buying it for yourself.
