Sorry if I sound too serious, I am mostly laughing not getting all wound up or anything.
You're right that it was a little strong of me to criticize the posting of the manufacturer numbers, I just have read too many Vortexers say "but this chip says it adds 3 more HP!".
If I can't go by manufacturer claims, then where do I START shopping?? Now we can move on to the actual testimonials on other boards....anywho, I've ranted enough, no offense meant...
You make a good point.
I would say, go by the manufacturer claims by all means. I didn't mean my post as something to read while shopping for a chip.
Mostly my concern is what happens when people make unsubstantiated claims and judgements, either before or after they actually own the chip.
The problem is, no one shows dyno plots comparing the chips, so you can't see how the plot got more or less jagged!
They show difference between stock and chipped. Lots of chips are notorious for having huge surges. Of course it can be other stuff, but some chips are more prone than others.
Anyhow, you can see what the best picture is, because you are judging appearance and you can measure appearance by observing it. You can't see what the best chip is, because you are not measuring what the chip does, you are measuring engine performance.
Smoothness and drivability are what I'm talking about. You buy a chip and you hate how it rides, I don't think you'll care about the 5 hp gain or loss. I sure wouldn't.
No, you CAN'T. We could put it on my car and I could LOSE hp. It is not an additive system, you can't add parts that independantly give you gains and guarantee that you will produce even higher gains. In some cases the sum of 2 mods may be MORE than their independant gains, and in other cases the sum of 2 parts may be LESS. You might have lucked out and found the "perfect combination" of exhaust, chip, downpipe, etc but that does not make the chip itself better.
And Aliens could come and add a hyperdrive to my car while you're not looking. Yes, there is the most minute possibility that my chip in the above example might make your car lose power but it's not even remotely likely. If 4 of us put a chip in a car and get X gains, chances are you will get close to those same gains. Which is going to be faster and put down more power? A car with exhaust/chip or a stock car? I can give a pretty good guess as to which.
You should feel good about your car if you are pleased with the results. Thats why you should do it.
Getting your money's worth = pleased with results. You may love your car but if you pay more for something and get less gains you shouldn't be happy.
You shouldn't then post up knocking the other guy's chip or FMIC or whatever, and saying that you have indisputable proof that your stuff is 'better' than theirs.
I wouldn't say indisputable proof. But I would post the data and say from these results I can say it's probably better.
Mostly my concern is what happens when people make unsubstantiated claims and judgements, either before or after they actually own the chip.
I don't see a single unsubstantiated claim OR judgement in this thread. I see people posting what they hope will happen, and what they think should happen.
back to the subject at hand lol..
who thinks they want to convoy with bart and myself next weekend up there?
Hey Ryan, sorry for the thread jack, I'm not accepting total responsibility, but I think my post stuck out as the instigator ....I work next weekend days of course, otherwise I'd be allover a road trip, I would like to try the 5 hour trial so I can save my pennies! Or I could take a ride when you get back ....anywho, good thread, not too much flaming, just hardcore argument!
