Dude did something to his car and had fun doing it yet still gets ragged on. This is one thing I don't understand on any car forum.

That is the best reason. You can have your opinions on this one way or another, but good for you Jerry. This is why we do what we do. To have fun.

Besides, you can pickup a new stock airbox for cheap if not free these days.

You have actually given me inspiration to try this myself seeing as my stock piping is kind of lacking, this may help. I've seen lots of guys on TDIclub do it and really like it. Maybe its time for me to do mine as well. I like the idea of having two due to the bottom one maybe even getting plugged with snow or slush.

Hell, even if there are no gains to be had in performance, the 10 bucks and some time is well spent to get the induction noise. Back it the day, every mk1/mk2 and even b5 audis had a swiss cheese'd airbox to get an intake growl. MK4's are the new MK2. Uber cheap to get into as a fun car. And not new enough to be afraid to cut up a little bit.

                    Re: DIY: Twintake done right

I have read on tdi's a nice oem upgrade is a air box and snorkel intake pipe from a euro R (it said euro not sure if there is a difference with the NA R) as the snorkel to the grill is much larger. Mind you i'm sure the gains aren't significant but a slight upgrade.

Yeah that's definitely an option for OEM+. But for people like me who have a hid ballast, ignitor, and a bunch of wires in side that snorkel, it's just a better idea to reroute the intake duct. Lol

Ha, Ha back in '89 I had an '85 GTI and I cobbled together some kind of intake with wide funnel, 3" flexible tube and some duct tape. Used some black zipties to strap it behind the grill. Probably did not do anything in performance but had fun doing it.
