  • Check engine light: 01' TDI...plz help me out

    hey guys,

on my 01' TDI the check engine light just came on out of nowhere a few days ago. I haven't really noticed a dramatic loss in power or anything and I can't even think of what could be wrong since everything seems to be working fine..

where should I go to get the codes checked? any places around town that would do it for free??? or would anyone on here be able to help me out???

any help/information would be greatly appreciated

If you come out to the meet tonight I am sure somebody could check the code on a Vagcom for you.

I must have missed you, I had my vag there too. Sometimes reseting the harness on the plug will fix that problem or it could be the harness itself. Do a search on the TDIclub.coms forums and you will come up with lots of troubleshooting posts.

yeah not sure who exactly you were i was at the end of the table near the door....noob stylez!!

heres the info I got off of tdiclub right now (for some reason I didn't see this when searching around before tonight...) checking the codes was a good double check to see what was wrong since you can't ALWAYS rely on internet info on these types of things:
"A CEL that comes on 20 seconds or so after startup is usually the Glow Plug fault. Any place with a basic OBDII scanner, like Autozone's in the US, will usually scan the codes for you for free. Then you'll probably want to look at the TDI FAQ for the fix. Usually one bad glow plug, or the harness not making good connection.

The problem with the Glow Plug CEL is that even after you fix the problem, you'll have to take it to someone with a code scanner to clear the code. Otherwise, even though you've fixed it, it will still continue to light the Check Engine light shortly after startup. It's a 5 minute procedure to have the code checked/cleared for anybody with a basic scanner, or the more advanced, VAG-COM software."

I was facing the window near your end must have missed you. Some CEls (eg MAF) will reset themselves after about 7 starts or so if the problem is no longer present. Some will still remain in the settings but will not light the CEL light. If I remmeber reading right it is usually just the harness not seating right.
