  • MK5 GTI wheel in MK4

I just did this last night. Used a DIY thread but it was missing some steps and information so I'll be making a new one.

So far I love it, it makes the car feel so different!

I agree that the new wheels make it a whole different feel of driving.

The DIY i used was pretty straight forward, wire in the old 4 pin harness to the new steering wheel and airbag wires, 2 for airbag, 2 for horn. Pretty straightforward.

Looks good, it's nicer to hang on to a fatter steering wheel

Nice work! A new steering wheel should have been one if the first mods I did when I had my mk4. Even simply going from the skinny 4 spoke to the sport 3 spoke makes a huge difference while driving.

Search MK5 wheel in MK4 on google, click the first result to see how to wire the harnesses, the airbag won't work unless you have a single stage connector and harness.

That's what I used, but my harness was different from the one in the pictures. There were also some steps that could have been clearer. I'll be posting my write up in the next few days. Hopefully it will help anyone else doing this.

And excuse the picture it's hard to get it to look nice at night, the flash makes it all look strange. I'll take a picture during daytime and post it up.

I also had an interesting surprise when I took my MK4 steering wheel airbag off, I found out it had never been connected to begin with! The plug was just sitting tucked in on the side. :(

And you didnt have an airbag light?

I didn't, good point. I hadn't thought of that, I'll need to look into this.

Perhaps my ABS error had a side effect and caused it not to show up?

Maybe someone has fiddled with this before and disabled it?

Perhaps it was plugged in but somehow got stuck on the side and unhooked itself while I took the airbag off?

Maybe scan the airbag system for faults? Disconnect something that would cause the light?

It probably popped off when you removed the bag, the wires are really short. Happend to me when I was pulling my bag the first tme.
