  • Going for a test drive

So, my g/f and I have been checking out some cars lately (wagons) and have gone for a few test drives. After we checked out a few cars we went over to N/L to check out a Passat wagon. Now she kinda wants AWD so I thought the Passat was out because of the price but I found out the 4Motion is going to be available in GLS trim! I was rather excited about that (as was she), so we are going to go look at it again.

Anyways, to my question: The Passat comes out of Germany and the engine (1.8T) is rated at 170hp/166ft/lbs of torque. Any Ideas as to why it's less than the G/J? I know the Audi 1.8T is also rated at 170.

Also, I'll probably go through the sales person I met on Sat. as he was fairly helpfull but i'm just wondering if there are any sales people on here?

Edit: I know I won't be able to test drive a 4Motion GLS model as they are barely available, I'm probably just going to drive a FWD GLS to get a feel for it and then (hopefully) a 4Motion.

I think a Passat Wagon would be sweet, you may also want to drive a A4 1.8T to get an idea of the weight/power of the AWD.

A few pics to wet your whistle though

Re: Going for a test drive

I love Passats and Passat wagons. I am jealous!

The Passat 1.8T is logitudinal (front to back) and the G/J is transverse (left to right)... so this may have something to do with it? This could affect many things. Something as simple as air flow or intercooler piping/placement might reduce the HP a bit. I have never seriously looked under the hood of a passat 1.8T though.

VW may also just be trying to be more conservative in their listed HP because the buyers of a larger sedan are a different market?

I would guess that with programming and cheap mods you can probably get the engine outputs to be as good as the G/J 1.8T.

Edit: The wheels on that first wagon look awesome.

ah Blair, why'd you have to do that! Good point on the Audi test drive (although, we didn't get a very warm welcome when we went in there, guess we didn't look rich enough! lol) It would be a good way to test the AWD 1.8T platform.

As for mods, well, I'd have to do a lot of convincing, but I could probably get away with some nice wheels! The fact that she's even concidering a VW is enough for me right now.

Edit: I think we could "chip it" though!

Hey Blair, you think you could post up a few more? I'll show her this thread tonight, and she can see first hand how sweet these machines can be!

You asked Blair to post more wagons... now you've done it.
