  • Got Jetta Need Warranty Info!

    Hey all,

I'm finally getting used to my '02 Jetta and am seriously considering some upgrades to the engine and exhaust systems. First should probably be a new ECU (am thinking APR but thats besides the point). But I was wondering about how this affects warranty in Canada. I know in the US there is some kind of law that says that a dealer can't void your warranty from installing an aftermarket part unless they can show that the part is the cause of the problem.

Does anyone have any information on warranty vs. upgrading in Canada? The car came with a 5 year bumper-to-bumper everything-covered warranty (not my choice, I bought it used and the warranty came from the previous owner). It would be a shame to void such a comprehensive warranty!

I would have asked Ian but I know he no longer works with VW. I am thinking that someone must know the details here...

If you get a chip, and your dealer finds out -- they will warranty free and clear -- simple as that.

I don't think its a simple as saying that if you get chipped, the dealership will automatically void your warranty. (I think that's what you meant by "free and clear".)

I know of people who are chipped and had warranty work done (with the dealer knowing about the chip), and everything was fine. It really seems to be a crap shoot as far as I can tell. May depend on whether or not the Service Manager had cream or CoffeeMate in his coffee that morning.

I think its fair to say that if you're chipped, it makes it much easier for the dealer to refuse warranty work.

I think it comes down to where and what; is the dealer somewhat receptive to the mods on your car and was the omd responsible for the warranty issue. Obviously if your car is chipped and the refuse to fix your heated seat, seems silly to me cuz they should be independent. Yet it is still a risk :( [Ponder] :(

What about the idea of getting a second ECU and just hot-swapping them every time you go in for Warranty? I am resonably sure that this isn't something that would be detectable. Unsure about the price, but it can't be THAT bad.

I think a 337 ecu is between 2 and 3 grand   , but it is more then regulars but they are not cheap, I think around a grand. You just hav e to figure out you want and what you are willing to risk. You could use the first couple of years of warranty do some cosmetic mods, then chip later and screw the remainder
