  • Broken Glove Box

Well, when it was minus 34 and I foolishly attempted to open my glove box....

The hydraulic in the base was totally frozen and the hinge broke. So now I'm stuck with a broken glove box that costs over 200 bucks to fix @ VW.

So has anyone fixed one these? Know of a wrecker with VW parts? Any ideas?

      Re: Broken Glove Box

The old glove boxes have been replaced with the euro style on all newer VeeDubs as they don't have the craptastic hinges that those ones did. If you ahve one of the old ones you can help it from breaking by drilling a hole in the back of the brake and putting lots of spray lubricant in there. I tried to fix mine by installing a long wood screw through the whole hinge but it is starting to break again, using something like JB weld might fix it if I can get it to bond well. Other then that you are screwed and might as well find a new frount piece online (I know of a few cheap places) If you look at the forums at the TDIclub.com site they have lots of write ups on the stupid hinges.

Montegomery Auto Parts is our local VW wrecker...

They're almost as expensive as the dealer though

            Just a though...

I don't understand why the wreckers are so expensive. Who they trying to fool?

Vortex or ebay even might be better bet for a used part.

How old is your car, and how many km's are on it? Maybe it could be a goodwill warranty item. Let me know.

LOL My 99.5 TDi has about 136k on it, I don't think the warranty will even cover my MAF

Editoor yes, brake no. The brake detaches from the door on mine, plus you should change the brake otherwise it will just happen again. I would point out to the dealer that they have been changed onthe newer models and ask them why

2000 GTI, 37,000 km - Fifth ave said no warranty coverage. Could try elsewhere I guess...

They said I'd need to replace the brake and the door, any thoughts on that? They're worth about the same each.
