Re: Volkswagen MK7 Golf R Coming Soon........

I was very close to buying a 2012 Golf R but didn't. There were a couple of things that I wasn't really crazy about. Mainly, I thought it was still a little underpowered and not having the ability to turn off the traction control kinda sucks. Also, the rumors of the S3 coming here had sparked my interest. Unfortunately, no more wagon means I'm no longer interested. Luckily, they have addressed all of these issues in the new Golf R. This will certainly be my next car. I'll be at the dealership as soon pre-order starts!

Yes the golf r is underpowered but a $800 program fixes that. The Americans can't turn off Esp but in Canada we can.

So with the previous R, the difference vs a chipped GTI was paying 15 thousand dollars for AWD and a front bumper.

I know some of you guys love your MkVI R's but I don't think it's worth the money for what you got.

With this new one I think it makes a lot more sense getting >300hp including an engine with significant differences, plus suspension changes, body changes and interior changes as well.

Mk6 R comes with 270 something out of the box, not 256 as rated. plus when you tune it and add a couple of inexpensive bolt on parts it's at 360-370hp with AWD. It's a pretty good package for the money in my opinion. Over the GTI it's a bit more than just AWD. You get a KO4, AWD, Bigger Breaks not including quite a bit of extra trim. Considering a loaded 2013 GTI was 36200 and the R was 40,000 I'd say the extra 3800 was a pretty good deal.

            1. There is no way I believe you that you can take a factory rated 256hp engine and get 370hp with a couple inexpensive bolt on parts.

            2. IMO a lot of dynos read high and I'm sure you can put a factory car on such a dyno and make it say 270 that doesn't mean its 270 from the factory.

            3. What extra 'trim' comes on the R? AFAIK its just the same trim with the R logo on some things, but I am willing to be schooled on this.

            4. Lastly I'm not talking MSRP here. I bought a loaded MkVI GTI and it was a few thousand less than that with all the fees included - and yes I can show you the bill of sale. I challenge anyone to show me a R bill of sale under $40,001 in Canada. The fact is that a lot of the Golf R's were sold WAY above MSRP while the GTI was sold below. I definitely know somone who paid around $50K which is 15k more than my GTI purchase, so it has happened at least once in Calgary.

              1. I'm not sure about "a couple inexpensive" parts, but I think Stage 2+ can get you there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC4NE...ature=youtu.be

              2. Lots of cars are underrated (335 - N54, S8, F30 N20 engine, Mk4 R32, F10 M5, etc). Mk6 Golf R is one of them, just take a look at some baseline dynos from tuning companies.

              3. Aside from the larger brakes, AWD, and K04 some other differences are - front bumper + led drl, centered exhaust, diffuser, wheels, badging on steering wheel/headrest/door sill/etc, and blue needles on the gauges. I think that's all.

              4. I'd have to do some digging but I think I've read/heard of a few people paying 38-40k for their R's.

                1. It cost me $2700 to take my car from stock to stage 2+ which is 360-370hp and I've driven it this way for 6 months or so. I interpret this to be extremely inexpenive for an additional 100hp and tq.

                2. It's the same power output as they advertise in the rest of the world when dyno'd althought they market it as only 256. Likely marketing to create bigger wedge between this and audi engines. eg. tts.

                3. Think KG810 answered this pretty well.

                4. That's a good point. The R coming took a few buyers out of the GTI market in the last 18 months and with the end of the platform nearing i'm sure theres been deals to be had for a while. I remember paying full sticker for my mk5 GTI in November 2006 and the only thing I could negotiate were mats and some 3M. So maybe that $3800 gap became a $7000 or $8000 gap when you factor in the deals to be had on a GTI. I just wanted to clarify it wasn't a 15000 gap because I'm pretty sure theres no dealerships out there selling brand new and loaded GTI's for 25k.

Re: Volkswagen MK7 Golf R Coming Soon........

I had a deposit on the last R, but backed out after a few disappointing specs. I really hope they don't take away too much from the Eurospec and even though I have a 6spd now I really would love a DSG thanks to some wrist issues I'm developing & I really want to stay with the 5 door.
I figure if they reduce the power for NA there is nothing to stop me going stage 1 when APR get their hands on it, that's the easy fix.

I am also very interested in the S3 sedan but if I don't have to spend 10K+ on the rings then why not.

Has anyone ever thought that the extra cost for an R is likely due to the extra training and tooling dealerships need for such a small number of cars?

                      1. Possible and quite cheap considering what you put in it. I was thinking of going the bespoke route which would've cost $2800 just for a TBE. You can put more power into the current platform and since hatches aren't as big in North America than in Europe, they had to keep cost down to make it attractive.

                      2. Dyno results vary but from what I've seen in reviews, dyno >= marketed HP

                      3. Yup

                      4. I did not pay $50k for mine and that's with 3M hood and front. More like $40ish.

EDIT: As long as they keep all of the goodies, then this new gen Golf R would be sweet!

Yes, and I'd recommend it. $2700 was the cost for the components that got me to stage 2+ but the cat back I attached to my DP was an incremental cost. Didn't provide much in the way of additional power but was worth it for sound.

Flipstah, I think I remember reading that you got a Haldex controller. If so, how are you liking it? This was one of my most recent mods but as soon as I installed it I wished it had been the first addition I made to the car.

What did $2700 get you? For me, I designed it to be catless; straight pipe FTW. I never got back into it because I'm working on my project truck right now but maybe 2014.

I do like the Competition controller but you can only tell the difference if you really throw it hard into a corner, like the Country Hills-Shaganappi intersection. Hypothetically.

I went with APR for the HPFP, DP, Carbonio Intake and APR tune. Since then I added a HPA Quad Pack cat-back. I think I'll upgrade to the VWR Intake soon.
Have to say I've noticed a massive improvement with the Haldex controller. Even when pulling away at partial lock I can feel the car pushing it's way around rather than being pulled. I'd recommend this controller to be done to any new R owner as their first mod. Right up there with a stage 1 flash.

Hope to see your car at a meet sometime.
