    Re: Molding Question

The best bet is to get some of the real body shop products. You will need to buy them from the body shop or from a body shop supplier. I think 3m makes most of them.

None of us have done body molding ourselves yet... although I was thinking of experimenting with it this spring... since its like 1000 dollars to have a rubstrip removed professionally

      Re: Molding Question

Yes, it can get VERY pricey. A small can of plastic weld/filler that is used to fill and smooth (you should never use bondo type stuff) costs about $150 a can.

Something like this, if I knew a bit more about how to use it I would give it a go...

derick said you want good stuff.. rudy's uses this liquid plastic that comes in a coke can and is like 150 a can but it will never chip crack, etc i guess it depends on what you want to spend..

              Re: Molding Question

Retail "Bondo" products are good for filling in chips.

It is NOT meant to glue plastic together, or to join plastic pieces. It is also not good for filling in large cracks or cavities.

If you are filling in big areas (side markers, rub strips), you'll need to cut pieces of similar plastic to fit, glue them with body shop glue, then smooth the cracks. Filling in big gaps like that with liquid products, resins etc is a bad idea.

I really, really want to learn how to do this...

                  Re: Molding Question

Maybe... who knows. Ask body shop, or do trial run with some plastic that is similar to your car parts.

                    Re: Molding Question

Duramix works great, and you can get it for a number of different applications, such as TPO filler, plasticweld, flex filler, etc.....Its expensive, but I don't think as much as that liquid plastic stuff.....Look at canadian paint & supplies in calgary, they are a body shop supply store....
