  • Thoughts on APR vs. Malone tune for TDI

Well, I've decided that the next mod on the list is to upgrade the ECU but I'm having trouble deciding on exactly which tune I should go with.

The APR Stage 1 tune seems to be getting good reviews on the forums I have searched and it does improve the performance.

On the other hand the Malone Stage 1 tune has a very similar performance increase but I think I also need to order the ECU upgrade ($499) as well just to get to the Stage 1.

It appears the only dealer for the Malone tune is German Car Specialist here in Calgary, does anybody have any reviews on them?

    Thanks in Advance.

I'm not sure about the 2.0 CR TDI's, but for the 1.9's Mark at Malone Tuning in BC would just rent out the loader for like $50 at which you just plug into your port in your car and you can flash your chip with your stage 1 or 1+ tune. Mark is awesome to deal with and is really quick at responding to emails and calls. Lots of people that are chipped are running his tunes and can vouch about how good the tunes are and if they are worth it or not. I have never personally ran an APR TDI tune, so I can't say much about that. I have run an UPSolute tune on my tdi's before and it worked, but it was nothing compared to a Malone tune.

I'm not sure if you're comparing the right tunes though. As both stock numbers are different in the graphs you posted. Maybe those are two different 2.0 CR engines you are comparing?

I can't compare, but Malone's support was great for me. I believe you'd be best to deal with his shop directly rather than the local guy....

Deal with Mark directly, I have nothing good to say about the local guy so I will leave it at that.

APR VS Malone, APR is a blanket tune, malone is blanket, but customized for your car.

I've talked to Mark in Vancouver BC and I would recommend him, he's seems like a good honest guy.

So far Mark is awesome to deal with. I can say otherwise for the shop though. They are both telling me to order through the other guy but at least Mark is responding quickly over email.

On a side note: should've bought a manual as I have to flash the DSG as well :(

I didn't even know APR did tunes for diesels. I hear though malone tunes for diesels are at the top of the ranks. I've been doing some research and i'm currently looking at the Stg 2 custom tune for my PD. Custom as i may go to dynamic egr control or i may just end up deleting it completely. From what i read the dynamic is better for warm up times. Need to talk to them to get some questions answered.

Anyone here own a flashZilla? Seems to be the easiest way to do the tune. Otherwise when i do pull the trigger i may just ship out the ecu.

Not trying to derail thread i just though i could sneak this in here.

Just remembered I still have a Flashzilla from my A3 but it's loaded with the tunes (put it back to stock when I sold it), so how does that work?

If you are planing to chip it and forget it, just rent the loader and go that route. Loaders were designed to be a one car go so that sharing of tunes could not be done.

You can send it in to Mark and he will wipe it clean so you can use it. Send him an email to let him know, he responds quick, amazing customer service.

I believe if you restore the factory tune to the car, you can then pass on the Flashzilla to use on another car. You just can't share it while a Malone tune is loaded on the car - during this time, it is locked to the vehicle.

                        Features

Supports most 2000-2008 model year vehicles.
3 Slots for storing ECU files:
1 Slot to securely store your stock tune.
2 Slots for modified tunes. You can swap in more modified tunes from your computer.
OBD2 cable for connecting the device to your vehicle.
USB cable for connecting the device to your Windows computer if you want to transfer tunes to FlashZilla. Apple computers are not supported at this time.
Read and erase ECU fault codes.
                        ECU recovery for reliable flashes.
Ability to sell FlashZilla to a new owner. Restoring the stock tune in your vehicle will unlock it for use in another vehicle.

That wouldn't work actually...that would lock the FlashZilla to the car that you load the tune into.
