  • Old discussion, aftermarket cold air intake/CAI

I know this has been beat to death but does having an aftermarket cold air intake (from APR/Carbonio or VW Racing) really make a difference or is it just in my head? Or should I just leave the stock airbox and get a good filter? Suggestions? I had a Neuspeed short ram intake in my MK4 TDI and all it really did was make the sucking sound louder IMO.

I have both a 2012 Tiguan and 2012 GLI with the 2.0L TFSI engine.

I have the AWE Tuning CAI in my GTI. The only reason I got it is because it came with the Stage 2 package that I bought. I felt a slight improvement in throttle response and a slightly different sound, but other than that not much change. If you plan on doing other performance stuff, it could be worth upgrading the intake, otherwise you're probably fine just switching out the filter.

I'm not really a fan of the CAI thing, even more so on a turbo application.
But a proper flowing intake does play it's part in the over all package. IMHO a velocity stack intake is best.
      I get mine thru BPI.

^x2 on the velocity stack intake being the best on any turbo application

CAI actually makes a difference in naturally aspirated engines

I plan on doing the intake, downpipe & exhaust, chip, suspension over the next few years. For near future I will probably put in a drop in filter (which one is reccomended?) because the current filter needs changing.

I'm not familiar with the velocity stack. Can you give an explaination?

Not the most scientific methods, but entertaining.

i'd go with the carbonio/apr intake on a 2.0t.. they look nice

Re: Old discussion, aftermarket cold air intake/CAI

I know you can hear the induction sound with Sri and cai but not sure about the gains. Maybe 1-5 max hp with a few pounds of torque, but the Sri could suffer from heat soak after the engine heats up, and cai will suffer from hydro locking.
Sounds silly but the octotake did gave me better resistance to heak soak in the traffic on very hot days, the velocity stack thing is pretty interesting so I might velostack the octotake.
Question: looks like velocity stack doesn't work with cone filters.

^^ velocity stack will work with a cone filter... That's what I run , you just need a filter that fits iver the stack opening . The inlet on the filter is 6 inches

I run a 3" velocity stack with 6" cone filter. Normally people would run a 3" filter, however you just put the velocity stack where the filter would go and the larger 6" filter just fits onto the outer lip of the velocity stack

Where did you get this set-up?
