  • Tires Revisited

I have been trying to work out tire sizes. Here is what I have come up with for Mk4's. The diameter needs to stay within 0.5 of 25 inches (I think) since that is the stock diameter. Width over 235 seems to rub for pretty much everybody.

It would seem to me that a slightly smaller diameter would be better for larger wheels, to compensate for the slower acceleration? So something like the 235x30x19 ? However, this is not recommended by most of the retailer sites...

Anyone have any suggestions about how to choose a tire size?

    19 x 8.5 (ish)

    225x35x19 25.1 * recommended
    235x30x19 24.5
    235x35x19 25.5 * recommended

    19 x 8.5 (Stretch)

    215x35x19 24.9

...and if anyone is looking at 18's

    18x8 (ish)

    225x40x18 25.1 * recommended
    235x40x18 25.4

    18x8 (Stretch)

    215x40x18 24.8

I didnt think you could get tires in 220 and 230 sizes, and some tires stretch more so than others. My 225's on 8.5" wheels look slightly stretched, where as Ryan's 225's on his 8.5" wheels look normal.

I dunno, if they don't come in those sizes then that explains why its not recommended

18x9 you'll probably want to go with a 235x40x18 on a Mk4 (I think) if these are made.

Mk3 (or audi TT) I have no idea how much width the wheel well allows.

I am proud of myself, I finally figured out how the stupid tire sizes work.

Further to my post above, I discovered that although 235x30x19 is a better fit for 19x8.5's on a Mk4 I don't think any companies make that size!

225x35x19 is the best fit if you can find it, but some tires only come in 235x35x19.

The tire size calculator on 1010 tires is very helpful for checking out diameters and the like.
