  • Boost gauge installed!

Finally. I've got my boost gauge installed! Damn that a-pillar clip was a bastage. Ryan and I spent a good amount of time reefing on that beotch before it would come off.

No buzzing gauge either thanks to the new t-fitting and the led matches thanks to the PerfectMatch LED! (could still be brighter though)

Thanks again for your help Ryan.

    Re: Boost gauge installed!

So I've had the boost gauge in for a bit now and I've been trying to better understand how my car is responding to my inputs and I've made a bit of a discovery (or maybe I've discovered what's already known). Anyway, I've found that little flutter in the DV that has been discussed here before coincides with something around 0 to 2inHg of boost (or vacuum). It seems to satisfy my earlier suspicions about the DV not knowing whether to open or close. Kinda like water at 0C, it can be water and ice at the same time.

If anyone has a stock DV and a boost gauge, can you please check if the same happens to you or if it happens at a different pressure. I know that there was at least one other person on the boards that had this issue. I've been able to make this flutter happen pretty much on demand now and now I unconsiously drive like this. The flutter is making me go mad.

well when i get the jumpy idle since the ECU gives the car gas teh boost goes up like yea 2vac or something so thats the cause of that

Ryan, I'm talking about the infamous honking DV syndrome.

The strange thing is, boost seems fine. It's smooth. It's just a noise that is annoying.

              I'd like to hear that...

The DV is supposed to open in vaccuum and close under boost. The action of the DV isn't going to be perfectly smooth since it is spring driven. If the spring is really soft (stock) then I imagine it is possible to just have the spring being slightly compressed, so that the rubber diaphragm is letting only a little air through.

You can probably mess with this by changing your DV spring? However, if you are using the stock DV then maybe its time to try one of the aftermarket ones...

Yup, I'm gettin ready for the chip.

The thing with the stock DV is I don't think that its broken like I've read on other forums and posts since boost and power aren't affected. I am starting to think that this is just inherent in the design.

If your DV is honking then you should get it replaced. I had no problems with my boost and my DV was honking for awhile. Eventually the CEL came on. It just depends on the severity of the tear you have on your DV.

how much was the PerfectMatch LED where can i find one?

It was pretty pricey as far as leds go, but I think it was about $24 CAD shipped. Check QMR Motorsports.

thats no good.. email 42 for 'the fix' i still haven't gotten mine and its going on like 13 days now! so if its not here tommorow i'm emailing them again
ps.. dim your lights to the lowest neil.. its not that the LED's will burn out but the on circuit resistor overheats and can burn out rendering it useless unless you ripped it apart and soldered a new one on
