Yeah but you guys are both very technically inclined and know the mkiv platform very well. I'm not sure what mr.kuji's biggest job has been. But doing things like simply pulling a motor or tranny can be very intimidating. Nevermind a transmission apart and rebuilding it yourself. I have pulled my own motor here with ease (considering I've never done it before), but there is no way I would ever rebuild my own tranny.

Bump. Still grinding upshifting into 3........ Wouldn't grind if I very granny shift..
Adjusted links multiple times, they work for 2 days then starts grinding again.
Have anyone tried the gm synchromesh fluid?

I used the AC Delco synchromesh stuff and it quieted down the transmission a bit and helped smooth out shifting

K thanks anyone have an idea how much they cost per quart at auto value? Their online catalog doesn't include liquids.

Perhaps go by the store and check it out? I don't think it was too much, maybe $60 for all the fluid needed to do a drain and fill

I normally would say ooooh your nuts for wanting to do this yourself , but this kid is so meticulous he might be able to pull it off ....... infact i will try find you a screwed trans to practice on i would love to see his diy ..... (you will need access to a press and some interesting tools ... but its more of a patiantce thing than anything) otherwise i have a number to a guy in calgary that does my transmissions ( i dont swim well here so i keep my a$$ out of the pool)and he is super reasonable . you get the parts he rebuilds for cash .

Yay! Fix the grinding and really sloppy shifter! The shifter cable ends on closest to the engine was almost completely split, the other link with the metal center is also a little worn. I got my links from Natty, parts number 1J0711761B and 1J0711761B, the new ones are quite soft and because I wanted a firmer shift feel I filled the bushing gaps with leftover silicone sealant, I say it increased the stiffness of the bushing by over 50%. Then I changed out the new OEM fluid with AC delco synchromesh($14 per liter). Then I went for a twenty-minute-test drive, and voila no more grinding and much better shift feel!
Conclusion: if your VW is around ten years old the rubber shifter end links are most likely on its last legs, replace them before they stress out your synchronizers! The repair costed a little over $100, which is much cheaper and less stressful than rebuilding a 02M.
