  • Help: 02M transmission rebuild info

    Hey guys,
Since the second day I received my car from the PO, third gear has been a bit choppy.

When I'm doing hard acceleration if I don't granny shift from second to third the gear will grind, however short shifting or even power shifting any other gears have no problems at all. Because of this, I'm assuming the third gear syncro is bad.

I changed the transmission oil about two months ago with OEM oil from ecstuning, but it still grinds if I don't shift perfectly.

What I need help with is how to replace the first to second and second to third syncro on the 02M FSR transmission, I also need the parts number, I would also like to know what else I should do while I have the transmission off.

    Any help will be appreciated!

    July: still grinding.......

Have you tried adjusting your end links or checking any of the shifter bushings?

No, I have no clue how to adjust them. The shifter bushings looked fine when I installed the R32 short shifter six months ago. Are the endlinks just the black thing with the spring that attaches to the shift tower? If so could you tell me how to adjust it?

Yeah I remember reading a DIY on vortex. I had some solid bushings you can buy from me if you wanna get rid of some of the sloppiness

Thanks guy, I'll see if I need new bushings tmr and see if the adjustment will stop the grinding.

              Learn to shift well?
But adjust your linkages is the first step, undo the spring clips on top of the transmission housing, set the home positions then let the spring clips loose again. Easy, takes a few minutes.
Next step to replace the synchro's is a decently big step, i would try to google other symptoms before i pulled the tranny

Woke up early this morning to adjust the links, the third gear is not grinding normal shifting at 5000 However the second and forth gear seems stiffer than before, like it takes more effort to get it in slot.
I pushed the shifter weight down and locked it in home position ,then locked the shifter down tightly, after that I pulled the two spring clip simultaneously then I release them. I didn't do anything wrong did I?

Re: Help: 02M transmission rebuild info

Well its a good sign if you can lock both the shift turret and the shifter into their home positions without having to undo the springs. Normally if you require an adjustment you cannot do this, this leads me to believe that the linkages were adjusted correctly to begin with

Anyone else find it crazy that the OP wanted to rebuild a transmission but is having issues adjusting shifter linkage? Normally I'd say good for you for DIYing stuff, but a transmission is one thing you really need to know your stuff on to pull apart

Haha, I didn't mean to be rude or anything... Hell, I'd be terrified of pulling my transmission apart.

Haha, the adjusted it again then everything works like a charm.
Yeah, I was looking for the worst case scenario, I'm not afraid of taking things apart as I remember or take photos of where everything goes.
                          Thanks everyone!

Transmission rebuilding is a HUGE undertaking...that's why they're so expensive to get rebuilt...I'm scared $hitless of the thought of doing one.
