Wierd issue with 2011 jetta tdi

So wierd issue. Had the jetta parked outside yesterday when I got home from work. Went and did some BBQ. Went to leave about 1.5 hours later and sunroof was all cracked. From the looks pushed out. I'll post pics after. Anyone ever heard of this?

Have had this car in super hot temps lots of times. And yesterday was definitely not even close to too hot outside. Not freshly washed. Parked next to my Audi too and it's fine. Looks like it just exploded out.

Think warranty will cover that? It's very strange. Gonna pop in and see what dealer says.

It's odd, but it does happen, sometimes there is a chip and it just takes the perfect conditions for it to finally blow out. Look at Danaldsons rear window that just cracked in the carwash out of the blue. I would call it a manufacturers defect.

Just an update. It looks like VW will cover it, its rare but its been seen before happening.

that's weird... Seeing these random cracked/exploded windows all too often now...

I've also heard that the slight different between inside and outside cabin pressure puts and outwards pressure on the windows/sunroof. So when there's a small crack, overtime it ends up in a blowout when the right conditions are met.

I've been meaning to 3m clear my panoroof just in case this happens. The last thing i want is to have shattered glass over my family.

sorry im a little late to the party. yup, similar thing happened to me but with my rear window, super crazy but it makes sense why it broke now.

Heat expansion caused it. At least it proves that your car has very very good seals.

Then what are the flaps for behind the rear bumper? I thought they were to release pressure?

They are pressure release flaps in the trunk. Think about it this way, there was a time in which these pressure release flaps were not installed on cars, the weather stripping was good. All good right? Then you go to slam a car door......
