  • Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept

Following yesterday's leak, Volkswagen has officially revealed the CrossBlue Coupe Concept before its public debut scheduled for tomorrow at 2013 Auto Shanghai.

The five-seater sporty concept serves as a preview for an upcoming SUV and joins the seven-seater CrossBlue showed in January at Detroit Motor Show which is tipped to enter production as well. The second concept adopts a considerably more appealing profile with a sloping roofline, more heavily angled windscreen and a lower front end. Although it's an SUV, styling is more important in this case than practicality.

The concept is 4889mm long, 2015mm wide and 1673mm tall, with a 2980mm wheelbase and a curb weight of 2,220 kg (4,894 lbs). It has 1709mm front / 1726mm rear tracks and sits on 22-inch polished alloys wrapped around in 285/45 tires. The boot capacity stands at 537 liters which can be increased to 1,101 liters once you fold the rear seats.

At its heart is a newly developed plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain which will arrive in several VW models. It consists of a V6 3.0-liter TSI engine developing 295 bhp (220 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) working together with two electric motors, one at the front axle with 53 bhp (40 kW) and another one for the rear axle with 113 bhp (85 kW) which together provide a combined output of 409 bhp (305 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).

A dual-clutch, 6-speed gearbox can send the horsepower to the front, rear or all wheels, while the driver gets to choose from five modes: eco, sport, off-road, electric vehicle and charge. When the latter is selected, the 9.9 kWh lithium-ion battery will be charged using the gasoline engine. The car can be driven in electric mode for up to 33 km (20.5 miles) and has a top speed of 74.5 mph (120 km/h). When using the concept's full power, the CrossBlue Coupe needs 5.9 seconds until 62 mph (100 km/h) and is able to hit a top speed of 146 mph (236 km/h).

In hybrid mode it has an average fuel consumption of 3.0 liters / 100 km (94.1 mpg UK or 78.4 mpg US) in the European driving cycle (NEDC). VW says when the CrossBlue Coupe Concept is powered only by the conventional engine it consumes 6.9 liters / 100 km (40.9 mpg UK or 34 mpg US). With the 80-liter fuel tank completely filled, the SUV can travel for up to 739 miles (1,190 km).

Yeah, I was thinking it looked a lot like the range rover too, and that's good because it's sexy as hell.
