I believe you would find different stats in the NA market though as the cost savings come from mileage driven, mostly. Take the UK, average miles driven per year (2010) is 10,800km. Canada is 15-20k km/year.

It would actually be worse as the distance driven here is greater (requiring more of the expensive maintenance further skewing the results in favor of the gas ). And the cold weather and sh*tty fuel would make the diesel ownership more expensive.

The twin charged 1.4 TFSI in the scirocco is pretty fast and light on gas, drove it in back in China last summer and torque was all over my butt, the emissions are pretty low at least according to VW.

I haven't read this whole post but I will offer an experience. I was in Germany going to the ring. I did sustained 200+ kph average going there, got Upton 240, if I recall correctly, from Dusseldorf area. Averaged 8_9L/100km. No chance in hell would a gasanything get close. It was an a3 with 2.0 td. North America only had the 1.9 if I recall. It was in 2007, so may have been an 05, or 06, ?? I wouldn't road race one, but maybe on a short course. If I hadn't been up to my eyes in superchargers, I would do a diesel, but Meyers scares me on the new ones. My city golf on the track never got past 150 even supercharged, so to compare wouldn't be right, but my Subaru 265, 2.5l with a chip barely saw 195 @ race city, and I would get a tank over 180km. Apple and banana comparison, but the road course is opening in Edmonton, why not have a face off, d vs gas. Full tank, follow the leader, see who ends up with a half tank at end.pdf night,vs empty tank. I will volunteer as a driver! My s/c city golf would be way too slow.

^^And you are strictly comparing gas mileage, not power. A gas would be ahead of the diesel at X time because of the power, the diesel would run for X time longer because of the fuel economy. We are not disputing fuel economy here, we all know that the diesel wins that.
