Well. All I got left to say is that I love my TDI. I love the torque it gives and the amazing fuel economy that goes with it. In two years I'm planning on importing a 2000 4 motion tdi loaded with the 6 speed in it. I'm planning on dropping some big money into it, probably around the $10,000 that Chris has sunk into his diesel, aside from mine being 6 speed and 4 motion. Some will argue its stupid and a money pit, and sure I know it is. But that isn't going to stop me from doing it and enjoying my 500 lbs of torque and 300 hp that I'm hoping to achieve with it while still achieving amazing fuel economy. I do agree 100% that a 1.8t will take any tdi mod for mod on a flat road, but if that road starts on a hill or a decent incline, the TDI will take it till it gets over the top at which point the hp kicks in and the 1.8t passes it. Some people don't care for hills or driving through the mountains, maybe its just a diesel thing and once you get the "Torque Bug" you can't help but stomp on it when you see a hill and feel the torque.

I agree intocco my mum used to drive a 600HP grand cheeroke SRT8 and that thing hauled off the line, nothing beats being sucked into the back of your seat.(i got to learn to drive in it (:
Flat road or not dj more power is faster . yes please make a 4motion tdi . frikin awesome .Stop thinking a 500 tq car with 2500 usable rpms under a curve will ever beat a car with 5000 usable rpms with even 300wtq . its about area under a dyno graph .

People love to say torque wins races. This is somewhat true because HP is simply derived from torque. However, what really wins races is a fat and long powerband.
A 700whp single-turbo Supra's have tiny little powerbands. They operate like a light switch, power is either on or off. A 500whp twin turbo Supra has a much fatter and more useable powerband and when you calculate the average power for the powerband, it would shock you to see the lower-powered Supra actually has more power under the curve therefore will often out ET/MPH far more powerful Supras. Like the saying goes, what does an 800whp Supra and a 400whp Supra have in common? They both run 12s.
so if you take both cars and add up the area under the line of the dyno . the car that has the most area will always be the faster car . sure if you cut off the rpms of a 1.8t at 4500 your monster diesel will stomp it . but that is not the case . area under the curve .Please tell me you are getting this... ? if you are then good. IF YOU UNDERSTAND how that works ,i can rest and stop this . does everyone understand now ?

The key point here is hp gets you a faster Et and wins a race . . I agree a tdi has mundo low end torque and torque is needed to get a vehicle started but on a hill or on a flat road we are all ready moving and out of that ever so important area torque is king ,hp takes over at that point my friend ....

The torque bug is true addiction. That is why I originally bought my TDI 7 years ago when I was racking up close to 1000km a week. Now I have a 2.0 TSI so its a whole different ball game.
This is the first time i'm agreeing with Chris.
However Chris, you have to take the gear ratios into consideration when implementing the area under the dyno curves
Gear ratios are a big factor yes. But you still need all the factors that make for performance in an engine..Tq and HP. and then you need to find the area under the line for both and i assure you regardless of gearing the one with the most in both types cars in question here will be the victor. Please someone else explain to DJ a hill is not a deciding factor in power delivery.
