So I bought some badging, and a euroswitch yesterday....I just can't decide whether to keep DRL's or to nix them.....And if I do its the TFL pin right? One more Q, which do I run the wire off of for the rear fog function?? Anywho, its a cool switch, been running with my fogs only last few days.....I'm now waiting a bit for the GTI grille badge, and the ICC rear hatch spoiler, they're all out right now....also dropped a line on the shocks/springs, but may wait for tax return time.....

DRLs are required in Canada for all cars newer than like 1986 or something like that. If you disable them, expect to get hassled.

I don't see any valid reason for disabling other than just bragging "Hey I disabled my DRLs".

I don't think that it is illegal to drive without DRLs, just all cars produced must have DRLs after a certain date. Have you ever noticed that most police cruisers have no DRLs!

          Re: new stuff, undecided...

          I found this on VWVortex:

Another way to disable the DRLs is to change a setting using a VAG-COM. Without going into too much detail, you can disable the DRLs as follows:

          Address 09 (Elect. Ctrl)
          Function 07 (Recode)
Subtract 1 from the existing coding.

          I did some more research...

          One page reads:

"It is illegal to disable running lights on any Canadian model that came with them from the factory and was produced after 1991."

          Another page:

Preventing the corner lamps and taillights from coming on as soon as the ignition is turned to the on position, but leaving the headlight portion of your DRL system operational (like most other DRL systems) would still be considered legal in Canada.

So perhaps it IS illegal to totally disable DRL's here.

If your car is pre-1991 I think you're safe.

However, I do not think the chances are high that one would get hassled.

Police cruisers have DRL's disabled for a reason though....In fact, they have them on a switch (RCMP) to turn them off, the reason being when entering into alleys, or doing any sort of stealth approach they can be totally blacked out....And the other not so cool reason, on the highway people tend to slow down to cars with DRL's approaching, so they turn them off to seem like an older non-police car in an effort to trap more speeders....I spend entirely way too much time with the police......

If you get hassled, pull the oh crap, I didn't notice that routine, then fix them, other than that, why not?

I disabled mine when I picked up a euro switch. The easiest, and reversable way of doing it is a small piece of electrical tape over the pin. I have never been hassled, although I usually have the fogs on instead of the DRL. If you get hassled, it's a 5 minute fix to pull the tape off the pin and reinstall.

Yeah, my thoughts aswell.....Oh, and the badge I got was the red lettered GTI with the rabbit, 20th style....just waiting for the red lettered grill clip-in piece, they always have the all chrome one, but I'm holding out.....not posing as a 20th, just like the badges better.....May have to wait a bit longer now for big mods, I have a nice $300 red light cam ticket to pay off now....

Go fight the ticket, or at least go look at the photo, I did and got off with like 50 dollar fine, cause I wasn't the only car in the picture, avoid court though in my opinion.

Yeah, I was the only car in the picture....I looked at it, and felt I didn't have a chance in hell....I am really good at not putting myself in those situations with close call yellows, and I stop all the time....But judging by the time I had just come off a 14 hour night shift, and was probably fatigued ready for bed......what can you do!
