Re: VW glass vs ordinary replacement glass retailer?

I got mine redone for the front and passenger was quoted around $150 for the front installed (non oem). I went with it and they did a really good job. But the passenger side they didn't too good, the doorcard wasn't lining up at all, but it was no biggie to me since I knew how to put it on and was a 10 min fix. As for the front windshield it seems to hold up much better than oem glass with rock chips. I've gotten hit with some ridiculously sized rocks (some i thought was going to decapitate my head off 2" x 3" rock from a truck) on the highway and came off with barely a scratch (whuich surprised me and this has happened a few times already). The location that did the glass for me was on the same street as Tunedub just a few blocks away and they did the job within the day. Still bugs me to look at the glass and not see VW stamp on it though.

From my experience, it takes more to crack OE glass vs aftermarket, aftermarket glass is thinner, cracks with the smallest rock and sometimes has weird distortion, OE glass get's more chips that can be filled because it's tougher.
Regarding who does the install, the dealership is just sourcing an third party glass installer. Go with a experienced installer and just ask them for OE glass.

I had Glassmaster do 3 windshields in a month because they couldn't get it right, the first one wasn't sealed at the bottom and snow would blow under and land on the dash, then they dragged a knife blade across my dash, they pulled the glass to repair the dash, then I didn't go back.

If you are selling the car, go aftermarket glass, if you are keeping the car get OE glass.

I now use Graham King from Sunrise Glass, comes to you, does clean quick work and can get whatever glass you want at a price point that is tough to beat. 403-651-7164

I think it partly depends where you drive. If you drive on gravel roads and highways you would probably want the cheaper option as you will be replacing your windshield every year anyway. If you do mostly city driving I would go OEM since the glass does seem to be slightly clearer.

I've had OEM and aftermarket glass on various cars and they both seem to hold up fairly well.

I do agree with getting a good installer who will clean the rubber seal area and make sure no rust gets in there.

Sunshine glass inc. Graham King did mine last summer -great work very meticulous and does all sealing and prep properly - big thumbs up for quality of work, glass was good quality (vw equal) and he did it at my house also.
