    Re: spring only??

I was looking into this as well. I heard since the new FK springs wont match the stock shocks it get worse and worse. People on vortex say around 6 months with the setup while other people have had no problems. I just got my suspension done and its freaking CRAZY with good shocks. It rides like a different car.

Cough the bucks up for some shocks too, you'll love it.

well since I actually have some EXPERIENCE with this, i'll chime in.

it all depends on how stiff or how low your new FK springs are, I had a mk4 with H&R Sports and stock shocks and it was perfectly fine, the stock shocks held up well. On my other mk4, I had race spring with stock shocks, and I felt the need to upgrade to shocks after a year because the ride was too bouncy.

it's up to you really, its recommended that you do the shocks at the same time, as you'll save in labour costs, but if yo udont have the money to fork it over at once, don't worry about it. your car wont die, you'll jsut be a bit bouncy, if anything at all.

          Re: spring only??

It will catch up with you eventually but in the short term it will be fine.

Although I think the ride would further improve with new shocks.

            Re: spring only??

Your drop is fairly minimal so you well be ok for a while but yes eventually it will effect the car, and there is no substitute for springs and matched shocks, except maybe stainless coilovers

              Re: spring only??

I have eibachs, springs only, the ride isn't any better, a bit worse, there was no handling increase really, cept being lower, and I have had the setup about 18 months now, and my shocks have not yet shown any signs of dying.

              Hope this helps.

                  Re: spring only??

Well when lower, ride is harsher, cause the spring have to be stiffer to keep you from bottoming out all the time.

                    Re: spring only??

I believe stiffer springs will 'handle' better, because there is less body roll and pitch when turning, braking, etc. But as Nick says, the ride will be harsher.

I have now had the H&R Race Springs on my car for about 6 months and have no probl;em with the shocks.... but I guess the GTI has the upgraded shocks so that might be why... I am eventually going to go with the Tokico shocks or maybe Bilstein.....

                        Re: spring only??

I've been in a car with NS race springs on stock shocks that died. Pogo stick like ride.

If your car is AT ALL bouncy, your shocks are toast. The shocks that come with our cars just cant handle the increased spring rates that lowered 'performance' springs provide.

Besides, look at it this way. You can get away without new shocks for a bit, but pretty soon (6 mo-1 year) you'll need them. Why pay the install fee 2x?
